CLECKHEATON 27  10
by JJohn Nursey

Despite a spirited effort Beverley went down to a resurgent Cleckheaton side and as a result slipped to mid-table.  On a quagmire pitch they could never get their speedy runners going and their lightweight pack was always going to struggle in the heavy going against a powerful home eight.  Cleckheaton are battling to escape from the relegation zone which is probably why they looked more up for it than Beverley who frequently seemed lethargic in comparison.  It was not a day for Beverley’s running style of play and in the end they could have no complaints at the result.  They were always second best although it was a much closer game than the final score suggests.

Playing uphill in the first half Beverley soon found themselves bogged down in the bottom muddy corner.  They struggled desperately to clear their lines which remained a problem all afternoon.  For the best part of twenty minutes they were hardly ever out of their own half.  But at the end of the first quarter all Cleckheaton had to show for their territorial advantage was a penalty from fly half Ian Gordon.  Then against the run of play Beverley took the lead.  With almost their first effective attack a chip ahead down the right touchline went loose and Goran Jelencic pounced to send Ally Forth racing to the posts from forty metres.  converted to put Beverley 7-3 ahead.

In the heavy conditions the big home pack was proving increasingly difficult to contain and from a penalty lineout ten metres out they drove to the line for Carl Mason to touch down and recapture the lead for Cleckheaton.  None the less Beverley were still getting plenty of possession.  at fly half was trying everything to get the backline going but it was not a day for intricate back play and the Cleckheaton threes generally posed the greater threat with their more direct approach.  On a dry pitch it might have been a different matter.

Ten minutes into the second half Cleckeaton increased their lead when Gordon made a clean break in midfield and chipped to the corner where full back Ross Hayden collected to go over for a try which Gordon converted.  At 15-7 Beverley were two scores behind but they were now enjoying more of the game.  A Kilgannon penalty narrowed the gap to five points and they were still in it.  They certainly showed plenty of endeavour as they tried to recapture the lead with and Danny Morris prominent in the loose and some excellent tackling particularly by and Tony Riby-French.  and Gardiner both threatened to break through but running attacks on both sides easily foundered in the rain and mud.  It was the power of the Cleckheaton pack that was Beverley’s main bugbear and from a penalty scrum ten metres out Cleckheaton drove over with ease for their number eight Matt Burrows to touch down.

After that nothing went right for Beverley.  Kilgannon’s frustration brought him a yellow card, Craig Hancock’s injury disrupted the pack, and following a general melee in which he seemed to be the innocent party Jelencic was shown a red card.  With ten minutes remaining a simple penalty which might have brought Beverley a bonus point went agonisingly wide.  Then at the very end it was perhaps inevitable that they would make a mess of dealing with a kick-through allowing Cleckheaton winger Mitch Ashworth to cruise in for a final converted try.  A 27-10 margin of defeat was probably a bit harsh on Beverley but they had been well outplayed.  On the whole it was a day best forgotten.

Bridlington 2nds 24 Vs 2nds 7
by Rose Tinted

Beverley RUFC 2nds travelled to Bridlington hoping to avenge a heavy defeat the last time the two sides met.  Despite the late loss of influential back rower Martin Shaw to an early morning groin injury and another couple of no shows from the selected squad the Beavers had a much stronger team than their previous visit to Dukes Park in November and made strong start after a somewhat lacklustre warm up.

Some good forward play was providing steady ball for the backs but often this was delayed in the ruck, meaning the backs space was soon cut down by an aggressive Bridlington back line. After 10 minutes of fairly even play Bridlington broke blind, some clever passing and good support play resulted in the first score of the afternoon, too far out for the conversion.

Soon after and an almost identical piece of play brought Bridlington their second score after Beverley RUFC failed to defend the short side again, despite the best efforts of stand in skipper Kristian Snellings last gasp cover tackle. In fact Snelling was one of only a handful of Beavers players who up to this point showed the required energy, desire and willingness to compete.

Beverley RUFC did however come back into the game a little and from a cleanly won line out on the half way fly half Sherwood threw a long wide pass to who fed full back Jamie Gill at pace before winger Josh Roe took the ball into the Bridlington 22 and might have scored if he had backed himself, however a neat kick through was only just cut out by the covering defence and the chance was lost.   From the resulting lineout the Beavers drove towards the line but were held out by the home sides defence and turn over ball was cleared up field.

Bridlington then took play into the Beverley RUFC 22 on a couple of occasions and the Beavers inability to defend the short side almost cost them dear again only for a poor pass from the Bridlington centre bringing an end to the move.   However this was short lived as just before half time Bridlington scored their third try after again breaking blind and finally scoring from a ruck five metres out again with Beverley RUFC’s defence nowhere to be seen.

A couple of changes at half time saw full back Gill move up to scrum half and his added urgency seemed to have the desired effect on the side. Finally Beverley RUFC started to be more aggressive in both defence and attack and moved play into the Bridlington 22 where after a concerted period of pressure fly half Sherwood bounced off the would be tacklers and flew over the line like a heavily pregnant swan!!!

In fact several team mates rushed to his aid with concerns about potential injuries to his lungs after such a landing.  Gladly he was fine and Gill duly added the extras.Beverley RUFC suddenly found a belief that had been missing all afternoon and took the game to the home side only for a couple of breaks out of defence by Bridlington almost resulting in another score.

And it was Beverley RUFC achilles heel all afternoon, their short side defence, that finally proved their undoing again as Bridlington cut loose and scored another converted try for the final points of the afternoon and a 24-7 victory.

Beverley RUFC can take some positives from the game. When they do attack through the backs they look dangerous and a little more belief in their ability would surely bring them more scores.

Good performances from Josh and , , Jamie Gill, the returning and a Man of the Match performance from James Graham for both his attacking prowess and aggressive defence were encouraging, but yet again their defence, particularly down the blind side let them down at times, which is all the more disappointing given its something they have worked on in training.

24 Penrith 26
By John Nursey

This was a real thriller with the result in doubt until the very end.  Fixtures between these two sides invariably produce fast enjoyable encounters and this was no exception.  Their two games this season have yielded a total of 88 points with only a margin of two points difference between the sides.  Today it was once again a nail-biting affair in which Penrith snatched victory with a penalty at the death just as Beverley RUFC had edged ahead for the first time in the match.

Despite the heavy conditions both sides started at a cracking pace.  After making a mess of the kick-off Beverley RUFC looked certain to take the lead when streaked away to the line only to be brought back for a forward pass.  They were then struck a double blow after a quarter of an hour when Steve Wood kicked a penalty to give Penrith the lead and fly half departed with a shoulder injury.  For twenty minutes Beverley RUFC’s game fell apart.  They freely gave away possession in the backs and up front they struggled to cope with the powerful Penrith pack led by the outstanding Mike Rance at number eight.

None the less Beverley RUFC struck back to take the lead with a fine try by Goran Jelencic following a lineout on the left and a darting run from Bussey who put Jelencic in at the opposite corner.  But at this stage Penrith still looked to have the upper hand.  Beverley RUFC looked dangerous when they ran the ball but there was too much wayward kicking and too many passes were ending up on the ground.  The Penrith pack was proving a real handful whenever they drove forward and sustained pressure up front brought two tries for centre Mike Hawley.  Five minutes before halftime yet another drive to the line led to a third try, touched down by prop Glen Carr, and Beverley RUFC looked to be facing an uphill struggle when they turned round 18-5 down.

Had Penrith not missed the three conversions it would probably have been all over for Beverley RUFC at halftime.  As it was, when went over early in the second half for a try converted by Beverley RUFC were suddenly within a converted try of taking the lead.  Immediately they were a different side and they began to play like a team inspired in an effort to get it.  They attacked with ball in hand and looked much better for it.  A tremendous fifty metre run down the middle by would have produced a score had support been on hand.  But Penrith themselves came back with a fourth try by winger Tom Armstrong and the lead was once more stretched to 11 points at 23-12.

For Beverley RUFC it was all to do again but they were quickly back to within one converted try of taking the lead when Worrall broke blind from a scrum near the Penrith line and put Jelencic in for his second try.  Play swung excitingly from end to end and it was Beverley RUFC who got the crucial breakthrough when Gardiner burst through the middle for Worrall to touch down under the posts.  24-23 ahead with Kilgannon’s conversion Beverley RUFC merely needed to see out time but numerous stoppages for injuries meant there was an eternity of added time to play.

With almost the last action of the match Beverley RUFC were penalised for diving over the top in a ruck after they had tried to run the ball from their own scrum instead of kicking it safe.  Sadly for them the out of touch Wood this time did not fail and the ball sailed between the posts from thirty five metres to snatch victory for Penrith.  Penrith just about deserved to win by virtue of their first half superiority but it was a mighty close run thing and a wonderful afternoon’s .

Anlaby Rd Rangers 1 Vs 6
By Dave Collingwood

Mohicans started brightly with Harry Staniforth winning the ball and played down the line who crossed for the forwards to run onto but none managed to connect and the ball was cleared. Louie Kelly was again controlling the defence, he layed a ball to Greg Whyley in space who threaded a pass through to Dan Naldrett.

He held off a couple of challenges before finishing nicely. More chances were created by clever play from and but were stopped by an Anlaby keeper in good form. After 20 mins Anlaby scored from a shot outside the box which Charlie Brooks in goal stood no chance to save.

After strong words at half time and an emphasis on getting the ball down the wings, Beverley Town Mohicans heeded the advice and within 5 minutes of the restart had scored when Will Collingwood latched onto a ball from Dan Naldrett. The next five mins brought another two goals with blocking a clearance and then played through to Steve Heath to score, he then turned provider for to coolly finish under pressure.

Beverley Town Mohicans were now in control with Anlaby finding it difficult to clear as Marc O’Hare, Sam Tuft, Steve Heath and Oli Morrison all closing down even from dead balls. Oli Morrison neatly layed the ball to Will Collingwood to score again and then Jamie Spence won the ball back and sent Will in to complete his hattrick. With a performance not as commanding as the previous week but still managed a 6-1 scoreline

Manager Dave Collingwood was delighted and praised all the team, Will Collingwood was named man of the match.

Leeds Coranthians 0 U16 21

Beverley travelled to Leeds Corinthians after there great win against Pocklington last week. There was a bad start both on and off the pitch with coach Chris “wham-bam” Dexter forgetting the kit resulting in Beverley having to wear a Leeds Corinthians strip.

The game also started slow as Beverleys forwards underestimated Leeds and therefore lost alot of ball due to this, after almost a full half of both teams playing sloppy and being stalemate, the ever inspirational coach made a few changes adding some more pace to the pack. made good yards and the forwards got over well to allowing the backs to have space and carve out an impressive move and dived over for his second try in as many games. converted. Half time 7-0.

The second half started strong for Beverley and the forwards began to work very hard, allowing scrum half to get clean ball, the backs began to look like they were going to run away with the game however it was a forward to score the second try through Mikie Hall in only his second game of returning. Ben Brusby converted to make it 14-0. Leeds began to get the better of Beverley as the match was coming to a close, pressuring the

Beavers into making alot of errors. Despite all the Leeds pressure Beverleys online defence was good and Leeds couldn’t find a way through and eventually gave away a penalty. This allowed Beverley to clear the ball and although losing it at the ruck, Lewis Nightingale made an interception and outpaced the Leeds team from 60 metres, this was the end of the game for Leeds respectively. Mason Jones converted.

Although Leeds took over the possession, Beverleys defence was too strong and therefore nilled Leeds.

Coach Chris Dexter was happy with the flattering scoreline but not the performance of which his players showed. He knows and so does everyone else that his team must step it up to beat Driffield next week.

Holme Rovers 2 2
By Lee Hastings

Hodgsons FC threw many chances away in this tricky away fixture at Holme Rovers.

Slightly under strength with Ben Daniels, Chris Heath and Jolly Thorne all missing, it meant a re-shuffle in the team line-up. stepped in at centre half with and getting a start, Hodgsons FC also welcomed back full back .

On a rather wide pitch The gradually chipped away at the opposition, and in driving rain created few clear cut chances. was applying himself down the right hand side, whilst Steve Grantham continued pressing down the left, using the width gradually.

It was Jordan Dexter who broke the deadlock putting the ball into the net from close range. Hodgsons FC continued to apply pressure limiting Holme Rovers to long range efforts, one of which just flew over the bar.

An equaliser came right on the stroke of half-time. As a corner was taken, full back Robinson was adjudged to have pushed a Holme player in the back. There were no complaints from the away side, and the penalty was dually dispatched.

The second half saw Hodgsons FC create far better chances. came close with swerving free-kick that just flew wide of the up-right, and Scott-Jon Tyler thought his shot had clearly crossed the line, the referee had a different opinion to Tylers and waved play on.

Hodgsons FC almost scored a few minutes later, and again it was Foster involved. After a shot hit the Holme Rovers cross bar, Foster headed the rebound straight at the keeper.

As full time was nearing, it looked very much like the game was going to finish 1-1, however there was to be some late drama. With a minute to go, Hodgsons FC took the lead through captain marvel . It surely looked like maximum points would heading back to Beverley. But there was to be a final twist in the game and a cruel one it was.

An attack down the Hodgsons FC right hand side looked harmless enough. Substitute winger Stew Scott tried taking control of the situation in the corner but unfortunately came out second best, the result of which was a cross into the box and free header at goal.

Seconds later the referee blew his whistle giving a final score of 2-2. This could be a defining moment in Hodgsons FC season. The pressure is now on to win these games in hand which could take the club top of the league. Whilst alarm bells are not sounding yet, it must be noted that the battle for the title has only just begun.

Next up for Hodgsons FC are local rivals Reserves.
Chairmans Man of the Match – Scott-Jon Tyler, who although playing out of his natural position, had a very mature game.

Beverley 2nds 12 – Scunthopre 4ths 7

After a couple of heavy defeats Beverley 2nds recorded a morale boosting victory against a experienced Scunthorpe 4th team after original opponents Cleethorpes called off on Friday morning.

A week after struggling to field a forward pack Beverley welcomed back influential number 8 after work commitments and also saw the return of two injured first team players Martin Shaw and . Todd badly broke his arm in the first league game of the season, so it’s been a long road back but together with Shaw and Vaux added some much needed aggression and experience to the Beavers eight.

Beverley needed to show more urgency in defence than they had in previous weeks and did so from the off and pressured Scunthorpe into a mistake from the kick off.   It soon became clear that Scunthorpe would rely on their big pack to drag Beverley into a forward orientated battle, something Beverley wanted to avoid and play quick expansive if possible.

This seemed to be on the cards, as five minutes in from a attacking scrum on the Scunthorpe 22 a planned moved that had been worked on at training brought the first score.  Number eight Vaux broke blind from the scrum and fed veteran scrum half Andy Ellis who drew the defence in and put winger away down the wing for his first try of the season.   Fly half was just wide with the conversion attempt.

Beverley continued to press and only silly errors and lack of concentration allowed Scunthorpe to bring play into the Beverley half without ever really threatening the try line.

Twenty five minutes in and another set piece move brought the second Beverley Try.  A line out on 22 was won cleanly and the ball was whipped out to Sherwood who slipped the ball to the looping Ellis to hit Vaux on a storming run to the posts for a try which Sherwood duly converted.

At 12 nil Beverley should have taken the game away from Scunthorpe but suddenly seemed to take their foot of the pedal.  This allowed the visitors to gain a foothold in the game and their experienced forwards drove continually towards the Beverley line, only occasionally releasing their backs whose attacks were soon snuffed out by the excellent defence from the Beverley backs.

Just before half time, from  a seemingly comfortable position on their own five metre line a poor pass  was only half cleared and what followed could have been described as a comedy of errors which resulted in Scunthorpe’s centre out jumping the Beverley defence and landing over the try line for a converted score.

The second half was pretty poor fare. The constant rain had made handling difficult and there was no real flow to the game as the referee seemingly blew almost non stop for the remaining 40 minutes.  Infact the only notable action was the issuing of one red card to the Scunthorpe number eight for stamping on the Beavers Skipper Charlton who left the pitch injured following the incident and two yellows to Beverley Gavin Jenney and Anthony Spence.

Despite the weather Beverley did try and play some rugby and went close on a couple of occasions with Sherwood being held up over the line and the impressive , whose lines of running caused problems all afternoon for the visitors, failed to hold onto a short pass from the fly half with the line begging.  Full Time Beverly 12 Scunthorpe 7.

All round it was a much improved performance especially in defence and the work rate was much higher than in previous weeks.  There were also encouraging returns from injury by Shaw and Todd who should be pushing for 1st team places in the coming weeks, as well as Vaux who is a handful for opponents with his barnstorming runs and big defence.

Greater tests await the 2nds and more hard work is needed if they are to register further victories during the run in to the end of the season starting at Bridlington on Saturday.

ERGFL U14 Division 1
U14 (9) V (1)

Division 1 pace setters South Cave JFC finally got back into league action against an AFC Tickton side who they had played almost 3 months to the day in the reverse fixture.  On that occasion a rather cold and windswept day over in Beverley made playing conditions very difficult, and although the Juniors secured a fairly wide margin victory, it certainly wasn’t the easiest game on the eye.

Today’s return fixture had all the hallmarks of following a very similar path as the hosts coughed and spluttered for the first 15 minutes or so, creating and squandering four gilt edged chances, which on another day would all have probably resulted in the back of the net taking a bit of a battering.
When the deadlock was finally broken on 17 minutes, a Nellie Rawson cross from the left was pinged back and forth like a pinball machine before finally being forced over the line by Molly Storey, who capped her home league debut with a goal.

Four minutes later and it was 2-0, Molly Storey’s pace causing panic in the Tickton area as the Cave striker doubled her tally.  As the game wore on, the hosts started to warm to the task and they finished the half with three goals of real quality.  Lauren Featherstone’s introduction from the bench brought the first of these on 25 minutes as a superb out-swinging cross was met on the half volley by Nellie Rawson to make it 3-0.  Rawson was on hand again on 33 minutes, rounding off a superb move which saw Storey and Olivia Key exchange a lovely one-two in the middle of the park before releasing Rawson and her shot crept just inside the post.  Goal number five came on the stroke of half time as Tickton’s first real attack of the game almost saw them claw a goal back of their  own and although Megan Fumagalli had taken the ball around South Cave keeper Holly Dixon, before she could get her shot away, the ever reliable Rachel Grunnill came to the rescue with a crunching tackle and, with lightning speed quickly turned defence into attack, as she burst down the left, slotted a superb ball in between two Tickton defenders for Nellie Rawson to run on to, Rawson’s cross infield to Key was then deftly flicked into the path of the now at full pace Molly Storey and she easily burst into the box before firing high and wide of the keeper to make it 5-0 at the break and complete her hat-trick.

Molly Storey got her fourth of the game ten minutes into the second half as she arrived at the back post to tap home Lauren Featherstone’s in-swinging corner to make it 6-0.  And Nina Kilby got in on the action on 62 minutes and made it 7-0 when she was first to react to Amy Thompson’s cross from the left.  Storey and Grunnill departed the scene now for a well earned rest ahead of next week’s top of the table clash with Malet Lambert but South Cave weren’t finished as far as the scoring was concerned.  Olivia Key slammed home goal number eight on 63 minutes and Lauren Featherstone fired in a howitzer from outside the penalty area on 66 minutes to make it 9-0.

Tickton had the last say however, as Fumagalli finally managed to get the clear shooting chance her hard work deserved and although she was chased down by the Cave back line, she did just about enough to scrape the ball home, although Lorren Hopper tried valiantly to hook the ball back off the line when most other players would have given up.

Morley RUFC 41 Beverley 13

Beverley’s long impressive run came to a disappointing end at Scatcherd Lane. They could have no complaints. They looked unusually subdued and were well beaten by a good Morley side. Without the influential and there was a distinctly makeshift look to the Beverley line-up behind the scrum. And so it proved, with Tupai’s guile being badly missed in attack and frailties in defence badly exposed down their right flank.

Within three minutes Morley were ahead when winger Simon Bradshaw left for dead and raced in at the corner for an opening try which he converted himself. fairly soon reduced the arrears with a penalty but Bradshaw responded almost immediately with one for Morley to maintain their seven point advantage. Beverley in these early stages were getting a good share of the ball as well as plenty of territorial advantage but were unable to conjure up the slickness of movement and cutting edge that the home backs enjoyed.

After 25 minutes a long Morley cross kick in the Beverley 22 found no-one at home and centre Liam Frost had merely to stroll in for a second try which Bradshaw converted to take it to 17-3. Beverley by now were finding it hard going and looked strangely disjointed. The normally elusive and Goran Jelencic in the centre could find no way through even though plenty of possession was coming their way. How Beverley missed the inspiration of Tupai! A second Duboulay penalty shortly before halftime did ease things slightly and when they turned round 17-6 down all hope was by no means lost.

But five minutes into the second half it was all as good as over when Mark Chester crossed for a converted try following a Morley lineout and drive to the line. Leading 24-6 Morley after that played with increasing abandon as wave after wave of attacks bore down on the Beverley line. Beverley tackled with plenty of spirit but Morley skipper Craig Field and Frost both added tries when the defence was too easily opened up down the Beverley right. Beverley did not help themselves by repeatedly kicking long and aimlessly straight to the lively home backs who merely ran back at them. Beverley’s kicking in general left a lot to be desired – too much of it and mostly too wayward.

With the game going into its final quarter Beverley increased their tempo. Skipper had fought heroically all afternoon to raise the Beverley game and it was he who made his side’s only clean break of the match when he went on a thrilling forty metre run only to be denied inches from the line. But from the ensuing ruck Gavin Gibson forced his way over for a try which Duboulay converted. Thereafter Beverley played some decent without being able to make much headway. Gibson again had a good day up front along with Matthew Adams, and Mark Hatfield added more punch when he came on at tight head. with some useful sniping around the scrum occasionally threatened but tended to overdo it late on. Beverley’s most dangerous looking back was Tony Riby-French, pressed into service on the wing, who produced plenty of thrust with the limited ball he received.

Despite raising their game in the later stages Beverley seldom looked like adding to their score and with five minutes remaining fly half Chester waltzed round two tackles to add a final Morley try which Bradshaw converted. On the whole it was not a memorable day for Beverley but they did at least have the consolation of knowing that they had been beaten by a very good side who have not remained in the top two all season for nothing.

Hull Boys Sunday – League match Sunday 14 February 2010

Mill Lane Utd v St Andrews East U15 – match report by C McCaffrey Final Score 5 – 2

A tough battle ensued as both teams fought out a determined and robust game with Mill Lane having more resolve to clinch all three points.  St Andrews hardly had time to settle before put Mill Lane on the score sheet after five minutes.  Mill Lane worked hard to hold off any St Andrews’s attacks with Walker, Marshall, McMullen and McDonnell combining well.

Again strong midfield play and great ball movement allowed Binney to double his tally.  St Andrews did react and a great solo run by their striker defeated Lane’s out stretched keeper in the bottom corner to pull one back.  This gave the impetus to Lane to extend their lead further through before the break.  St Andrews role in the first half was reduced to part involvement as Lane’s defence coped admirably with anything thrown at them.

The second half started well again for Mill Lane as Binney completed his hat-trick and Ringrose capped a magnificent return game from injury with a fine headed goal from a well taken corner kick by . Lane’s struck the cross bar from a stunning free kick, while other well worked movements lacked the finishing touch as both teams coped on a very slippery muddy pitch.  St Andrews did produce some creative football resulting in a wonderful free kick that was hit perfectly to the top of the net but they had left it too late.  Lane’s was noted for his non-stop running and hard work on the left midfield.

The penultimate race in the East Yorkshire Cross Country League took place at Welton last Sunday.  Over a hundred athletes from local running clubs tackled a very muddy 5-mile course through Welton Dale.

finished fourth overall and was the first Beverley runner to finish.  After the race he commented: “It was horrible slow and sticky mud.”

Most runners had found the going really tough but Pearson noted that “ was outstanding and also ran really well.”

Andy Johnson was indeed outstanding as the second Beverley runner home and finishing in 23rd position overall.   In his first season in the cross country league he has competed in all races and has gradually crept up the finishing order from 55th in the first race.  The muddy conditions at Welton did not seem to hamper him and his excellent performance was rewarded with valuable points for the men’s team.

It was Lucy Stamford’s first cross country race since joining last year and she finished just behind club stalwart Helen Storr adding valuable points to the ladies’ team score.  Stamford was using the race as part of her marathon training and ran home afterwards to clock up a total of 19 miles.

With one race left in the series Beverley’s men’s and ladies’ teams are both lying in fourth position.  If the club can field its strongest teams they have a chance of challenging for third position but with club members committed to training for various road marathons the cross country league may not be a priority.

travel the relatively short distance to Morley this Saturday to take on table toppers Morley RUFC in the National League 3 fixture. The Beavers themselves have been gradually creeping up the league table and are now in 5th place. Considering the bad run of injuries that they have experienced this season and the small squad that they have, this is a remarkable achievement.

Last week they turned in one of their best performances to date when they beat a strong Chester side in a hard fought but thoroughly entertaining game. One of the features of Beverley’s performances has been the outstanding form of inside centre , who displays a knack of putting his centre partner, whether it be or into spaces in the opposition defence.

Unfortunately, he is doubtful for this Saturday, and indeed for the next few weeks, having damaged the wrist that he broke earlier in the season. He will not know the extent of the damage until he receives the result of his orthopaedic surgeon’s examination later this week.

Jade Gardiner is also doubtful still with damaged ribs so it is possible that Beverley will have to go into the game with a badly depleted back line.

2nds 0 Malton 52

At first viewing the scoreline suggests a totally one sided contest, however for the best part of 50 mins Beverley competed well and  played some good , only a lack of composure, a couple of wrong options and several injuries meant that in the end Malton ran out convincing winners after taking their chances with clinical precision.

From the outset Beverley back line took their Malton counterparts on at every opportunity, and made breaks after some deft passes from fly half .  It was only Beverleys lack of killer instinct and tenacious tackling by Malton that kept them out.

Malton showed how dangerous they could be with a  big pack producing quick ball for  their backs who had the edge out wide with a couple of very speedy wingers who would make the Beavers pay later in the game.

It was from a break out of defence that Malton were held up over the line, from the resulting 5 metre scrum their impressive number 8 went over for a converted try.

Play was pretty even up to this point with Graham and Mander looking dangerous for Beverley whilst Malton counter attacked with real pace. One charge to the line by Graham seemed certain to bring the first points only for Beverley to be  penalised for running into their own man.  Malton went up the other end and duly scored another converted try followed soon after by another break out of defence which the Beverley cover failed to deal with.

Still Beverley came back and a should have finally got on the scoreboard from a Mander surge up the middle, yet  a poor pass from the ruck resulted in a knock on and chance missed.  Yet another knock on accounted for the next try scoring chance and the beavers turned around 21 nil down at HT.

To their credit Beverly continued to take the game to Malton and 2 minutes into the 2nd half Mander was held up over the line but that was as close as they came to threatening the scoreboard.

From then on injuries to Skipper Charlton, flyhalf Sherwood, centre Mander and Matt Brown meant the Beavers were reduced to 13 men and Malton inflicted further punishment on the depleted Beverley side.

Despite the size of the defeat there were some impressive displays from and Gav Jenney whose legendary father Gordon stepped up from the Bandits to help the side out and scrum half Andy Ellis who played out of position in the back row due disappointingly to the non appearance of one of the squad.

James Graham and Luca Mander looked like they could form an exciting centre partnership as long as the forwards can provide some decent ball, but the team as a whole will need to up their work rate in defence to give themselves any chance of competing with the opposition for the rest of the season.

This Saturday the 2nds entertain Cleethorpes 2nds at 2.15ko.
