A North Ferriby family are urging runners to show their support for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution by taking part in the inaugural Jane Tomlinson Hull 10km next May.

The 10km run will be the second time Annette Quarterman has pounded the streets for the charity after taking part in the BUPA Great North Run earlier this year with her husband Allan.

The couple are committed to raising funds for the charity after tragically losing a family member in a diving accident.

Annette’s sister, Christine Ware, lost her partner Paul who was a serving officer with Humberside Police Force, while diving off the Donegal coast in 2007.

The charity’s volunteer lifeboat crews assisted the search for Paul and during 2008 the family raised £1,906 for the lifeboat stations involved in the search, Lough Swilly and Arranmore. They have also joined their local Hessle RNLI branch, assisting with fundraising activities there.

Speaking about her support for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, Christine said: ‘We are indebted to the lifeboat stations and volunteer lifeboat crew who searched for Paul and to the RNLI as a whole.

‘Raising funds for the RNLI and doing something positive for the charity enables me to overcome some of the grief and sadness that stays with me on a day-to-day level.’

Annette Quarterman got the running bug after completing this year’s BUPA Great North Run with her husband Allan, who was already a seasoned runner.

To get in shape for the world’s largest 13km road race, Annette followed the RNLI’s training plan, going from a complete novice to accomplished runner in just four months.

She said: ‘Before I started training for the Great North Run I had never run before in my life. It was an exhilarating experience and the atmosphere and support we received from the crowd on the day was incredible.

‘I’ve kept up my training since then and am really looking forward to taking part in the inaugural Jane Tomlinson Hull 10km and raising more money for the RNLI.’

The Hull 10k Run For All takes place on Sunday, 23 May 2010 and will benefit the Jane Tomlinson Appeal as well as the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. Cancer Research UK, The Daisy Appeal and Dove House Hospice are also registered partner charities for the event but runners can choose their own favoured charities to benefit from sponsorship.

RNLI Events Manager in the North, Lisa Rutter, said all the partner charities are expecting places to fill out fast.

She added: ‘The RNLI has 200 dedicated places for the Hull 10km, although runners can choose the charity to benefit from their sponsorship during the registration process even when our places are filled.

‘Runners will need to pay a £20 race entry fee and all RNLI registered runners will receive a free RNLI running vest and fundraising pack. All the partner charities together are hoping to raise thousands of pounds for good causes and the money raised for the RNLI will really make a difference, going directly towards helping our volunteer crews save lives at sea.’

To run for the RNLI at the Jane Tomlinson Hull 10km, log on events; email Lisa Rutter at lrutter@rnli.org.uk or telephone 0161 787 8779.

2nds produced arguably their best performance of the season against a spirited Driffield side and in the process scored 55 points for the second week running.

Looking at the score line you could have been forgiven for thinking the conditions were suited to fast open running , however the game was very nearly a victim of the weather as constant rain had left the pitch with areas of standing water and heavy underfoot.

Undeterred by the conditions Beverley RUFC started like they had finished the previous weeks match and moved the ball around at every opportunity playing fast and wide, causing Driffield problems from the off.

After only two minutes, Beverley RUFC registered their first try of the afternoon.  From a lineout on the half way line quick ball was moved wide and hit the line at pace before sending Josh Roe over in the left hand corner for an excellent try which fly half converted from wide out.

Beverley RUFC, with the forwards playing as a unit, and providing quick ball to the backs were in total control of the game and creating openings almost at will. 20 minutes in and Beverley RUFC had scored two further tries through rampant number 8 Dave Brant and Centre Danny Docherty, one converted by Sherwood to take a 19 nil lead.

However as is Beverley RUFC’s want they relaxed and began to make a number of errors that allowed Driffield into the game. From a seemingly harmless position outside Beverley RUFC 22 Driffield cut through the Beaver defence and crossed for a converted try.

Despite regaining the initiative Beverley RUFC couldn’t penetrate the Driffield defence again and at halftime had a 19-7 lead.
Playing with a slight breeze behind them Beverley RUFC again wasted no time in taking the game to the visitors.  With the back three of Roe, Nightingale and willing to run the ball back at every opportunity it was that man Roe who picked up a loose ball in his own half and outpaced the cover for his second try of the afternoon.

From the Driffield restart Dave Brant took the ball straight back at them, with great support from , Matt Brown and Eddie Russell, who was simply outstanding all afternoon, Driffield were unable to cope with the power of the Beverley RUFC pack and with ball aplenty the returning jinked his way over to extend Beverley RUFC’s lead.
With the bench of Andy Meagher, , Luke Pardon, Stu Charlton and introduced Beverley RUFC were now rampant.

More good forward play took Beverley RUFC to the Driffield line and quick hands saw Nightingale, who had a try disallowed for a forward pass, over in the corner soon followed by further tries try for Sherwood and another for Dale.

Another Driffield restart fell to Beverley RUFC’s Russell,  who went on a rampaging run into the opposition 22, a series of quick drives resulted in Todd picking up and flopping over from 2 yards for the last score of the afternoon.

For the second week running Beverley RUFC scored nine tries with five conversions and given the conditions this was an outstanding team effort from the Beverley RUFC side who are playing with plenty of confidence at the moment.   Man of the Match was Eddie Russell.

FT 55-7

The 2nds would like to congratulate on his 1st team debut v Stockport last Saturday, just reward for some outstanding performances for the 2nds.
Next up are Scarborough who visit on Saturday, KO 3pm.

At 1pm, the pitch was fine and playable, but the heavens opened and by kick off time, the pitch was waterlogged. With the rain still falling, the referee was of a mind to call the game off, but both captains agreed that they should try to play the game.

Brushes and squeegees were used to clear some of the excess surface water, the match went ahead with great credit to both sides as they played the game in good spirit throughout in difficult conditions. Both sides defended well in a suspense-filled game that ended in an 8-8 draw which, on balance, was a fair result.

started the stronger, but lost scrum-half, to the sin-bin when he attempted to prevent a Ripon player following his own clearance kick. Ripon used the numbers advantage to take play into the home half where ’ defensive line encroached offside at a ruck for Richard Hooks to give the visitors an early lead.

was just wide with an attempt to level the scores. Ian Barker was sin-binned for Ripon when he pulled down the jumper at the line-out Hullensians wasted several chances through handling errors, but leveled the scores when Ripon held on in the tackle. Hooks was off target with two further attempts for Ripon, who also wasted a try-scoring opportunity when Sean Nicholson delayed the final pass too long when they had an overlap.

Turning round at 3-3, Hullensians dominated possession and took the lead on 65 minutes when a catch at the lineout was followed by a drive for the line where Andy Walker got the touchdown for a try. Andrews was short with the conversion attempt. Hullensians wasted further opportunities to make the game safe before Ripon equalised the scores with two minutes remaining.

Hooks was off target with the conversion attempt. Hullensians had one more play to try to win the game, but when they won a ruck 15 metres out from the Ripon posts, they ran the ball and knocked on when a drop goal attempt looked a better option.

Final score – Hullensians  8  Ripon  8

Coach Glynn was delighted with his sides performance as the beat Leven 9 – 2 at Longcroft School.

The match which was one of only a handful to survive the wet weather that hit Beverley and surrounding areas over the weekend leaving many games called off.

Molescroft however did not have it all their own way and found themselves a goal down inside the first 10 minutes.

This however seemed to spark to the side and despite not playing at their highest level the Beverley team did enough to get the goals and the points.

Tommy played at centre half putting in a mature and controlled performance reading the game well stopping most of the creative play Leven showed. Stevie once again showed his defensive skill putting what his coach described as a ‘solid’ performance on the right.

At the other end of the park it was more of the same from Molescroft with Robbie, & Cazza getting a hat trick a piece with Harry and Elmo bagging one goal each respectively.

After the match Glynn said;

“At half time we could never have thought we would score so many goals, although we were 4 – 2 up the match was just to close to call. It was a very good performance by all the lads.”

The blue and golds finally ended their losing streak and recorded their first victory since December 5th at a rainsoaked Leisure Centre last Saturday. The conditions made the ball like bar of soap and both sides frequently spilled possession.

It took until the 25th minute for the visitors to break the stalemate with a try. The home sides reply was swift and with was unlucky to have been pulled up short following one of his mazy runs, was on hand to go over from the dummy half position.

The restart kick from the visitors went out on the full and the resultant penalty sent Beverley back on the attack again. It paid dividends with forcing his way over in the corner for a try which he converted himself.

The hosts went into the interval 12-4 to the good and came out for the second half in confident mood and some impressive handling in the wet saw Steve Davidson send over for a try wide out. The hosts then hosts then lost some concentration and a fumbled high kick saw the visitors pull back a try.

This however proved a minor blip and the hosts took complete control for the rest of the game. More impressive handling saw Steve Davidson score again and minutes later he completed his hattrick forcing himself over despite the best efforts of at least four Cottingham defenders to stop him. The pack of forwards laid the platform for victory revelling in the difficult conditions and one such forward Mike Brown put the icing on the cake with a bustling 40 metre run to slide in beneath the posts.

A relieved coach Rich Shaw commented afterwards

” The wheels have fallen off our season since Christmas but that performance was more like our early season form when we looked like possible promotion contenders.”

At the time of going to press Beverley have yet to be allocated a fixture this weekend.

Beverley paid the price for one dreadful lapse in defence to go down to a narrow defeat at league leaders Stockport.  The wet conditions meant the game was fairly error-strewn and often scrappy, but it was exciting and enjoyable for all that.  It was played throughout in a good spirit for which great credit is due to the refereeing of Simon Lazenby who kept it flowing with the minimum of fuss.

The result could have gone either way and certainly played some of their best of recent weeks.  They were not helped by several enforced last minute changes to the line-up but this performance was as good as we have seen for some time and they must surely have now put their losing run behind them.  Only some sloppy handling spoilt an otherwise enterprising effort.

They had the better of the early play and deservedly went ahead with a penalty from in front of the posts when Stockport were caught offside.  Sadly they conceded an identical penalty of their own within a minute of the restart and fly half Matt Bebbington levelled the scores.  Beverley RUFC continued to dominate the half with their pack producing plenty of good ball.

Several times they carved out openings only for the final pass to go astray.  and Goran Jelencic on the Beverley RUFC wings always looked fast and dangerous but poor handling and over-elaboration in midfield meant the wings did not see enough of the ball.

Stockport with less possession moved the ball wide more quickly and looked the more incisive for it.  It was a day when the wet conditions were not conducive to intricate backplay and direct running was the better option.  Twice Stockport broke clear down the left only to be denied by who made two superb last-ditch tackles to redeem a day he might otherwise prefer to forget.

Beverley RUFC probably had more clear cut chances in the first half.  nearly scored when he broke through in the home 22 and they might have turned round in the lead had they opted to kick for goal with a late penalty instead of into the corner.

Stockport looked a different side in the second half.  From the outset they played the slope to their advantage constantly kicking to the low corner.  Seven minutes into the half they scored the decisive try when Beverley RUFC made a complete hash of dealing with a harmless looking kick towards the line.  They failed to gather the rolling ball which allowed centre Craig Cooper to pounce and touch down.  Bebbington with a superb conversion from the touchline took Stockport to 10-3.

Beverley RUFC made a fine effort to get back into it but the passing in the backs went from bad to worse and it was a day when even the normally reliable Duboulay and Tupai were not immune.

Some ill-directed and aimless kicking straight to opponents did not help.  But once they had their noses in front Stockport had a more solid and confident look to them and in the later stages Beverley RUFC could make little progress.  Tupai, Bussey, and Jelencic all made dangerous breaks and Ally Forth once broke threateningly from a maul but the home tackling was too good.  Stockport ended the game strongly but Beverley RUFC’s own defending was equally as good, keeping them out and deservedly ensuring they at least left with a hard won bonus point.

With results elsewhere going their way Beverley RUFC’s league position has not suffered unduly following their recent disappointing spell.  They now have a slightly easier run-in to their league programme and there is no reason why they should not end the season on a satisfying note, particularly if they can maintain the encouraging form shown here.

Final score, Stockport 10 Beverley 3

took maximum points in this local ‘derby’ clash against Reserves, winning 3-1.  This was a must win game for the , after a poor start to the New Year. The pitch wasn’t in great condition but both teams adapted reasonably well considering.

It took 20 minutes before the deadlock was broken. Hodgsons took the lead through centre back who’s header looped over the Beverley Town keeper. has to be given credit here, after all, it was his superb left foot in-swinging cross that supplied Wallis.

Town had a chance 10 minutes later to equalise from the penalty spot following clumsy challenge on forward . Dexter picked himself up, received a yellow card and faced up to Mike Evins of Town. Dexter redeemed himself with a dive to his left and saved Evins penalty.

That wasn’t the end of the penalty drama. After approx 10 minutes of further play, Beverley Town were awarded a 2nd penalty following a dubious handball decision. A new taker, and a different result this time, as the penalty was driven past Dexters right hand side for 1-1.

Hodgsons stepped up a gear and pushed on to try and regain the lead. They did so shortly after through leading scorer . The former Town player finished coolly, chipping the advancing keeper for his 15th of the season.

As the half was coming to an end, Hodgsons lost midfielder Chris Heath with a knee injury so he was replaced with John Helyard.

The second half didn’t see many clear cut chances for either team. Hodgsons got more involved during the second half, and caused problems running with the ball, keeping the Town defence on the back foot.

Midfield duo and John Helyard continued to dig deep in the centre of the park preventing any attacks on goal. Whilst Ben Daniels and Karl Wallis hardly put a foot wrong at the back.

A third killer goal came with 20 minutes remaining. The head of Scott-John Tyler putting Town out of this match.

This win puts Hodgsons above Beverley Town Reserves and keeps Hodgsons amongst the leaders.

Man of the Match for Hodgsons – Captain Paul Silvester. Although it must be noted that right full back Daniel Piwinski played through the match with a sore back and didn’t put a foot wrong.

Once again head over the Pennines to take on table topping Stockport. Once again the Beavers will be looking to halt their recent slide and, on the face of it, they face a tremendous task.

However, they will take heart from their performance last week at Rossendale when, were it not for some extremely over zealous use of yellow cards by a very poor referee, they would almost certainly have ended their losing sequence then.

With Beverley playing up a considerable slope, into a howling wind, the scores were level at 3-3 after 25 minutes. The Beavers were playing some excellent and looking very comfortable when 3 yellow cards and a penalty try within the space of ten minutes, completely killed them.

Rossendale scored 27 points in this ten minute period, the referee gave no explanation for the cards even to the Beverley skipper and a shell shocked Beverley side were never going to recover.

Once back to full strength and playing down the considerable slope, the Beavers fought back bravely but, despite the referee awarding penalty after penalty against Rossendale, but no yellow cards, they were unable to make up the difference.

This week it is hoped that will be fit to return and Goran Jelencic also returns to the wing.

made the long trip to Easington looking to pick up maximum points from the leagues basement team. The did that winning the match 3 nil, however, if wasn’t all plain sailing for the Beverley side.

It took 33 minutes before the deadlock was broken, and it was Daniel Atkinson who scored with a neat chip shot over the keeper, following a flick on by . On what was a wide pitch Easington appeared to adapt well, playing the ball wide and looked dangerous at times.

Fortunately the Eastenders had left the shooting boots at home, and never gave goalkeeper any serious problems.

The second half was very much the same as the first, with Hodgsons FC creating a few chances, but the home team certainly applying more pressure and looking the more dangerous.

It took a good 30 minutes before Hodgsons FC scored a second. Danny Cartwright was the scorer following good footwork and a neat finish past the Eastenders keeper.

Substitute grabbed Hodgsons FC third goal, firing a left foot shot hard and low into the back of the net.

The result could have been more emphatic if the referee hadn’t disallowed goals from and Wes Monteiro for offside.

Man of the match – Captain

Although not vintage once again, Hodgsons FC still didn’t look in any serious trouble and always had that next gear to step into if needed. What was pleasing for the tanners, was Ben Daniels starting and finishing the match after a layoff with a bad back, and the return of and for the next match away to Viking Raiders.

Beverley 2nds made the trip across the Humber Bridge to take on Scunthorpe IVs at short notice after original opponents Marist called off late on Thursday evening.  Even with this late change of fixture the Beavers were still able to travel with a squad of 18 to take on side they had narrowly beat at 12-7 less than a month ago.

Last week Beverley  were 17 nil behind before they started to play and things looked ominous as, the massive Scunthorpe inside centre bounced of defenders at will before the home side scored a try with their first real attack after only 2 minutes.

However Beverley were determined not to be bullied out of the game and started to take their larger opponents on through their dangerous looking back line of , and after several years studying and working away Richard Wynne, who would produce a man of the match three try performance at outside centre on his return to Beverley colours.

The forwards were also more than holding their own up front with and Matt Brown turning over ball and the pack as a whole rucking with more commitment than had been seen recently.  They began to provide quick ball for the backs to test the home side defence and Josh Roe was only just tackled into touch after a nice move through the three quarters.

Beverley by now were playing most of the in the Scunthorpe half with only the odd mistake allowing the home side to clear their lines.

From a barnstorming break by number 8 Dave Brant the ball was fed wide to winger who was held up 5 metres short. The forwards took the ball to the line before it was released to Fly half Sherwood whose wide pass found Wynne who fed Captain Charlton before Graham was sent clear for an unconverted try.

An almost identical move ten minutes later brought Beverley their 2nd try and this time it was Wynne who was on the end of some slick passing to score his first try of the afternoon.

The Forwards were now totally on top and Scunthorpe pack resorted to spoiling tactics, which the referee soon put a stop too. From one quick tap penalty on the Scunthorpe 22, Todd fed Sherwood who ran unopposed to the line for a try he converted himself.

Some silly mistakes and needless penalties allowed Scunthorpe back into the Beverley 22 and from their own quickly taken penalty their full back slipped through some poor tackling to reduce the deficit to 19-12 at half time with an unconverted try.

Now playing with the slope and slight breeze Beverley were looking to play the game in the Scunthorpe half but it was from a well executed move on their own ten metre line that Wynne sliced through the home sides defence and streaked away for a fantastic try, which Sherwood duly converted.

The Beverley three quarters were now simply unstoppable as Graham steamed over after good inter passing with Wynne, before Wynne himself completed his hat-trick  with a another fine try started in the Beverley 22, following more good back play.

Not to be denied Josh Roe who ran well all afternoon was on the end of another break from the Beverley half and went over from fully 70 yards for a converted try. Either side of Roes try, Dave Brant who made ground all afternoon with some powerful surges crossed for two tries (one converted) as the Scunthorpe defence simply couldn’t cope with his power close to the line.

One lapse of concentration late in the game allowed the Scunthorpe fly half to cross for a converted try to make the final score 55-19 to Beverley.
All in all it was a very good all round team performance with 9 tries showing what the team is capable of if they play with quick ball.  Matt Brown was singled out for praise for stepping into the second row and got through a tremendous amount of work alongside Todd and the Jenney brothers Gavin, Mark and Shaun, but Richard Wynne was awarded Man of the Match for a fantastic performance on his return.

The only down side was a nasty looking back injury to young full back Jack Courtney who left the field in some discomfort but we are pleased to say he has fully recovered.

Over zealous brandishing of yellow cards spoilt what would have been a cracking game at Rossendale.  Ironically it was a match played throughout in a good spirit with both sides intent on fast open .  Almost certainly it would have been a tight contest between two sides which before the rash of the yellow carding looked to be evenly matched and both up for the win.

took the lead after only two minutes with a penalty before Rossendale had laid a hand on the ball.  With Phil Duboulay back from injury and restored to inside centre there was a snap and crispness about the Beverley RUFC backplay which had been missing for the last few games.

With plenty of quick possession they ran the ball with speed and intent, as indeed did Rossendale when they had it.  James Bramall levelled the scores with a penalty when Beverley RUFC were caught offside but with only ten minutes left of the first half Rossendale had been unable to add to their score and make the big advantage of the slope count.

At that stage with the score at 3-3 Beverley RUFC could feel reasonably happy knowing they had the advantage of the conditions to come in the second half.  Then it all went wrong.  Within the space of ten minutes Matthew Adams, Danny Morris, and Martin Shaw were all sent to the sin-bin as Mr. Sullivan appeared to reach for a card as his first option at every infringement.  Beverley RUFC were clearly shell-shocked and in total disarray and they never recovered.  From 3-3 the score went to 29-3 in ten minutes as Rossendale made the most of it with tries from Alastair Harper, Tom Albinson, Matt Mckenzie and a penalty try, three of them converted by Bramall.

Even with the advantage of the slope Beverley RUFC needed a superhuman effort to come back in the second half.  It got off to the worst possible start when winger Nick Fountaine went over for a fifth home try converted by Bramall and then full back Roger Dennison added another nine minutes later.  There was no way back for Beverley RUFC.  At 41-3 down victory was clearly beyond them but once they were back to full strength they re-grouped and fought back splendidly.  For the remainder of the match they had Rossendale on the back foot.  The referee’s preponderance with yellow cards mercifully subsided in the second half with Rossendale flanker Thomas Short being the fifth and final unlucky recipient.

forced his way over for a try for Beverley RUFC from a short penalty and Gill’s conversion got them into double figures.  Then a superb converted try by sprinting away from inside his own half brought it to 41-17.  Beverley RUFC continued to have the better of the half and added a third try when Gavin Gibson touched down following a forward drive to the corner.  Three converted tries adrift but Beverley RUFC made a terrific attempt to get them.  They completely dominated the final stages but sadly time ran out.

Despite the nature of the defeat there were some positive aspects for Beverley RUFC.  The back line again looked menacing; Bussey, back in his best position at full back, was a constant threat, and Chris Harding looked as though he could be the answer to Beverley RUFC’s worrying wing problems, showing plenty of pace and a good eye for an opening.

Despite the disruption the pack stuck at it well and skipper Worrall’s example and effort was immense throughout.  There was plenty of good rugby from both sides but sadly there was also ample confirmation that referees’ brandishing of yellow cards like there is no tomorrow is not really in the game’s best interests.

16 members of took part in the final fixture of the season in the East Yorkshire  cross country league, which was held at Sewerby near Bridlington on Sunday 7 March. The race was run in fine sunny weather, over a course that was still very muddy in parts, after an above average amount of snow and rain during the winter months.

In the women’s race, Hester Butterworth who had already secured sufficient points from the previous 5 league races to retain the women’s title which she won last year, completed the season in style with a clear win. Hester was notably also ahead of all but 20 of the 70 men who race alongside the women in this league, and was also one of only 4 Scarborough AC club members to compete in all 6 league races.

For the third time this season, Scarborough women achieved a perfect 1-2 finish when  Helena Schofield finished as the runner up. She was well clear of the third place finisher, Nicky Moore of the , whose team finished in first  place to clinch the league title.

Scarborough’s team which was 3rd of the eight teams at Sewerby was completed by Angela Garrity who was racing over the country for the club for the first time, and finished up in 24th place.

The team was backed up by fell runner Sue Kendall-Lansell in 26th and Sally Kingscott who continued her improvement of her debut season when finishing in 28th place.

The men’s team was led home by Ben Mukherjee who had a very close race with of whom he defeated when winning the Thixendale fixture. However  on this occasion Phil reversed the placings, and went on to win at Sewerby and secure the league title. After finishing as the winner or runner up in 3 of the league fixtures, and 9th in another, Ben would have been a strong contender for the league title, if he had been able to complete in the mandatory 5 races.

who has been a top 10 finisher all of the season was next to finish in 10th overall, and the first of the over-45 division.  Overall he was the 7th highest scorer and also the first in his age group for the second consecutive year.

He was followed by , who was one of only 4 Scarborough club members to have competed in all 6 races. His overall 13th and runner up in the over-40 group, secured 9th overall, and also and runner up over 40 veteran for the season.

As expected Ted Kraft was a clear winner of the over-55 division, both at Sewerby and for the season when finishing in a splendid 15th overall.

also justified his favoritism to retain the over-60 title he first won last season, with a 100% win record in his age group, achieved when finishing well up in 18th and his highest position of the season.

Fell runner, Mark Kendall-Lansell completed the scoring team when finishing up in 28th overall.  However the team had to settle for runner up spot behind the City of Hull Athletic Club who duly retained the league title, after winning 4 of the 6 races throughout the season.

The team was backed up 5 runners, led by in a splendid 30th overall. Dave was another of the ever present Scarborough men, and his 3rd over-50 placing at Sewerby promoted him to overall second in the age group for the season.

The next to finish was who was also running in his first cross country season for the club, and has been making a steady improvement over what has been 12 races in three different leagues. At Sewerby Rod completed his first East Yorkshire season in 52nd place.

Rod was followed home in 62nd by who was racing in the league for the first time in the season after concentrating mainly on fell races. Paul Garrity completed his first season for the club when finishing in 65th, and was also notably the 4th placed over-55 in the league for the season.

was the last of the Scarborough runners across the line in 69th overall and  was also the first over-65 once again.  Mick thereby retained the overall age group title for the 4th consecutive year, and after completing 15 races, will regain the Senior Cross Country Participation trophy ahead of the final North Yorkshire and South Durham fixture.  “

West Leeds  13    3

Unless the RFU move the goalposts again regarding promotion and relegation issues, Hullensians saw their hopes of back-to-back promotions blown away by the the strong diagonal West Leeds wind as they went down to a disappointing 13-3 defeat in an error-strewn game dominated by both sides’ defences.

Hullensians played the first half into the strong wind and found both playing conditions and understanding the referee’s interpretation of the Laws difficult. West Leeds took the lead in the second minute with a penalty, which proved to be the only score of the half as missed two penalty attempts for Hullensians, who had also been unlucky not to score two tries when both Chris Smith and Jason Young were held up short of the line.

Hullensians pack were certainly in the ascendancy after the break and were causing West Leeds plenty of problems. Andrews levelled the scores with a penalty on 60 minutes. West Leeds made several replacements which appeared to restore parity to the battle up front and restored their lead after 65 minutes with Bedford’s second penalty.

Hullensians then looked to have took the lead when Young turned the ball back inside for Smith to go over for a try, but the referee ruled there had been a forward pass in the move. With seconds of the match remaining, West Leeds made a strong drive to the left corner, from where the ball was moved first right, then back left, and when Bedford stood strong in a three-man tackle, he popped the ball out for Sam Neave to breeze over for the decisive try, converted by Bedford to end the match and leave Hullensians ruing missed opportunities.

Joe Sanders had a good game going forwards for Hullensians, whilst JJ Burrell conducted a master class in defence.

Hawks 20  2nds 9

moved into the play-off places in Division 1 of the East Yorkshire Merit Tables with a gutsy perfomance to earn this hard-fought win in a nail-biting finish against a physical Malton side.

The game was refereed by a certain Gareth “Bonecrusher” Williams who let it slip that he had played at blind-side wing forward for Wales in the 70’s. That was perhaps his biggest mistake of the afternoon as both sides tried to emulate him in what seemed like an extended episode of Casualty.

Far from it being a dirty game, however, the match was played in the finest traditions of the game with no quarter asked for and none given. Malton took the lead with a penalty, but this was cancelled out by one from Clayton McCloud. Malton restored their lead with a second penalty, again cancelled out by McCloud to leave the scores level at 6-6 at half-time.

Malton began to look the stronger side after the break as they went back in front going into the final quarter with a third penalty, before Hullensians showed their determination by stepping up another gear as they cut Malton apart with two well-taken tries.

The first came after had made a fine break up the left and drew the last man before turning inside for to score his 11th try of the season, with McCloud adding the conversion.

The second came after a chip over the top by McCloud saw the ball bounce up for to race clear for a touchdown, McCloud again adding the extras to take a jubilant Hawks up to the final whistle.
