Performance Manager Rob Hoekstra today announced the four riders who will represent Great Britain at CSIO4* Lummen, taking place later this week.

Ben Maher, Ellen Whitaker, Phillip Spivey and Mark Armstrong, accompanied by Chef d’Equipe and Performance Manager Rob Hoekstra, will all travel to Lummen in Belgium this week to contest the Belgian Nations Cup.

Ben Maher, 27, from Bishop’s Stortford in Hertfordshire will ride the eleven year-old grey gelding Wonderboy III, a horse Ben co-owns with Mike and Emma Phillips of the Quainton Stud.  Ben and Wonderboy have recently returned from a tour on the European continent, winning classes in s’Hertogenbosch and Zurich.

Newly crowned British Open Champion, Ellen Whitaker, 24, from Barnsley, South Yorkshire will partner the fourteen year-old chestnut gelding Ocolado, owned by Dawn Makin and Ellen’s father, Steven.  Ellen and Ocolado will be hoping to emulate their last appearance on a British Team, when they produced a faultless double clear round in Abu Dhabi, helping secure a British victory, at the beginning of February.

Phillip Spivey from Ipswich in Suffolk will make his sixth British Team appearance with Tracey Forrest’s twelve year-old chestnut stallion, Romanov II.  Phillip and Romanov have spent the last few weeks competing on the Villeneuve Loubet and Toscana Tour’s where they secured several Grand Prix placings.

Mark Armstrong from Bordon in Hampshire will ride Thesaura, a fourteen year old bay mare which Mark jointly owns with his wife Emma.  Mark and Thesaura enjoyed tremendous success on the recent Spanish Sunshine Tour, taking victory in one of the Grand Prix’s.

Champion’s sponsorship of the British Nations Cup Team is the result of the brand’s deep-seated belief in the importance of continual development, dedication and professionalism, together with a desire to offer British equestrian talent every possible opportunity to reach the very top of competitive show jumping.

The Belgian Nations Cup will take place on Friday 30th April and results can be followed at www.lummen-horses.be.

The British Show Jumping Teams continue to be strongly supported by the UK Sport lottery funded BEF World Class programme.

lost to 1st XI by 6 wickets

3rd XI 209 for 6
South Holderness 210 for 4

3rd Xl got their league campaign off to a bad start, with defeat against South Holderness on Saturday at .

Having won the toss Beverley batted first but lost an early wicket. The experienced and steadied the ship with a fine partnership of 128 until Goforth was out for 64.

Moon soon followed for 52 and Beverley struggled to get the momentum required to set a really challenging total and finished on 209 for 6. , with a spirited 24 not out, also did well.

The South Holderness reply was helped by some rusty bowling, with far too many wides and no balls being delivered by the Beverley attack.

An experienced Holderness side always looked in control as they knocked off the total with six wickets in hand.

Guy Brumfield was the pick of the home attack, taking 2 for 31 from his 12 overs.

New Earswick 191 for 4
2nd XI 192 for 4

The 2nd XI travelled to New Earswick to start another campaign in Division Two under new captain who won the toss and asked the opponents to bat first.

A frustrating first 20 overs saw both John Lewis and new recruit from Hutton Cranswick, , bowl tidy spells with no luck at all. Robinson especially hit the deck hard and looks like he could be an excellent acquisition. New Earswick looked well set at half way with prolific opener accumulating quickly.

The turning point in the innings came with the introduction of spin from and who both bowled tight, tidy spells. Sugdon especially saw all his hard work over the winter pay off with all four wickets to fall at the cost  of fifty eight runs to see New Earswick close on 191 for 4.

The captain had asked for players to value their wickets highly this season and openers Ali Brumfield and Kev Thompson responded in excellent fashion. An injury-hampered Brumfield made 49 and Thompson 34.

Faisal Abid then came to the wicket and played some magnificent shots in making 57 not out. He was well supported by Jon Vodden and Paul Fleming as he led the away team to a comfortable 6 wicket victory and a great start to the season.

Terrific.  Simply terrific.  This was at its very best and a clear indication that when played like this there is not much wrong with the modern game.  This Yorkshire Cup second round tie was a real thriller with a nail biting finish and a final whistle that brought to an end a thoroughly enjoyable evening for players and spectators alike.

Hull eventually emerged victorious thanks to their more clinical finishing but they were pushed all the way and any uninformed spectator would have been hard pressed to guess which of the two sides was in the higher division.

had the better of the opening play and Phil Duboulay was narrowly wide with an early penalty attempt.  When he got a second chance soon afterwards he made no mistake and took a deserved lead.  Hull at that stage could make little impact as took the game to them with slick and incisive running.  But they were right back in it when a loose pass in midfield was intercepted by centre Greg Lound who raced clear to the posts for a converted try.  continued to carve out the clearer openings with Richard Bussey and David Worrall both making superb breaks only for a lack of support to deny them a try.  Hull with fewer opportunities took their chances more clinically and added a second converted try from Moto Tony who took a looping pass to get over in the corner.

7-3, 14-3, and then 22-3 – it looked to be steadily slipping away from Beverley RUFC as they turned round nineteen points adrift.  Yet in the second half they continued to give as good as they got and maintained an even share of the game despite the score.  Both sides were throwing it about with abandon and with no little skill.  Beverley RUFC were continuing to create the better chances without quite being able to put them away.  James McKay, Danny Morris, and Worrall all broke clear only to be denied at the death by a loose pass or lack of support.

Then at last Beverley RUFC struck with a try in the corner by Bussey which Duboulay converted.  22-10, but surely still too great a mountain to climb for a comeback.  Hull in any case immediately appeared to squash any thoughts of one with another try of their own to stretch it to 27-10.  But Beverley RUFC were not done.  Junior Tupai cut through to the posts for another Beverley RUFC try and showing a rare turn of speed down the wing beat the defence to touch down a kick ahead with Duboulay adding both conversions.

Suddenly at 27-24 it was all to play for in a desperate finish.  Beverley RUFC might still have won had they taken their chances and would very likely have done so had the game gone on a bit longer.  What was certain was that Hull were mighty relieved to hear the final whistle, allowing them to contemplate a visit to Wharfedale in the next round.  Yet it was the sort of enjoyable encounter where somehow the result seemed to matter less than the game itself.

For Beverley RUFC it was almost certainly their best performance of the season with every player giving it his all and contributing to a night to remember.  Their second half fightback was a tremendous effort from any point of view.  A game like this, played in a fine spirit by both sides intent on going out to enjoy it, inevitably makes you wonder if the Yorkshire Cup might after all be better off for being without those clubs who choose to treat it with little respect by scratching from fixtures on the strength of flimsy excuses.

Beverley 2nds 20

Scarborough 2nds 22

After two decent victories, Beverley 2nds entertained Scarborough 2nds at expecting a tough encounter against a side currently sitting third in their Merit table.  And so it proved to be in a close game played in excellent spirit, Beverley went down 22-20 in a game they could and probably feel they should have won.

On a perfect day for both sides tried to run the ball at every opportunity.  Scarborough showed their intent first and after taking the play into the Beverley 22 moved the ball from right to left to score an unconverted try in the corner after 5 minutes.

Beverley responded well and took the game to the visitors, was again at his best and carried the ball well all afternoon.  From a series of forward drives Beverley moved the ball crisply through the hands and a lovely delayed pass from Richard Wynn sent , who cut a great line, in for a try converted by .

Neither side could really get on top up front although Scarborough clearly had the advantage at lineout time which restricted the Beavers supply of quality ball.

As both sides tried to attack through their backs Scarborough went close a couple of times with some slick back play and eventually scored after a period of sustained pressure.  A successful conversion and a further try meant they turned around 17-7 in front.

With the wind at their backs Beverley felt confident of clawing their way back into the game.  Eddie Russell was introduced after arriving late due to work commitments and he had an immediate impact with his aggressive rucking surprising the opposition.   Despite this and more ball for Beverley the Scarborough defence held firm.

Beverley couldn’t find the same slickness in their back line they’d shown in previous weeks but still had a willingness to run whenever they could despite never quite breaking through.

It was through the forwards that Beverley registered their second try as three or four phases of play resulted in Brant barging over for a converted try.

Soon after a Gill penalty brought the scores level only for Scarborough to break from deep and somehow their right winger evaded four would be tacklers to retake the lead 22-17.

Still Beverley came back and more pressure resulted in another Gill penalty reducing the arrears again.  Beverley then seemed to lose some composure and two long kicks out of defence went dead handing the initiative back to Scarborough.

Despite continuing to press for the winning score Beverley never really came close again and will reflect on a couple of lapses in defence that ultimately proved costly in a 22-20 defeat.

Next Saturday the 2nds will have another chance to gauge their recent improvement against another of the front runners in the Merit table as they take on Bridlington away at Dukes Park.

The opening game saw Champions elect take on Real Soldierdad, who had the opportunity to help out their mates Trogs. took and early league wan Dan Moore smashed home a sweet freekick and looked to have sealed the title when Dan tucked in a second before half time. However Soldierdad are never a team to give in and made a spirited fightback in their final appearance at Soccer Sixes.

Mid way through the second half they had drawn level, and the smiled returned to the faces of the Weighton players. But the boys from Waterside we in no mood to relinquish the title they have had their grip on for the majority of the season, and with a couple of minutes to go the returning Brad Palin popped up to score the winner and seal the league win – WELL DONE WATERSIDE!!!
Weighton themselves had a tough game against the unpredictable . continued to play the long ball game, which isn’t the best idea against big Martin Moss and the second meanest defence in the league, especially when they were relying on (9 stone dripping wet through) Andy Galloway to be the target man – Sox Gal, but they were not playing to your strengths…
The game tight throughout, until 2 mins from time when Phil Wright Stepped into his own box (and you did I was watching) to play the ball back to the keeper. The ref had no choice but to give a pen, which was smashed home by Moss for the win. Second place secured.
110 could only muster 5 players due to leave commitments back on camp but found themselves 2-0 up within 5 minutes. AJ’s finally pulled themselves together and made the extra man advantage count, and a very entretaining game finally finshed honours even at 3-3. Ian Holland scored his fourth goal in 3 weeks and showed his class throughout. If AJ’s do stay in the league, Holland would definately be a player to keep hold of, as their recent run of form since he joined proves.
’s final game was against Reservoir Trogs, who were basically the same team as 110 due to lack of numbers. A couple of last minute extras made kick off time to boost the Trogs numbers, and seemed to do the trick as the boys raced into a 2-0 lead with goals from Diego and Kev Neale, who is still in the hunt for top goal scorer. But showed the grit that has seen them remaining unbeaten in 2010, even with a heavily depleated team, and brought the score back to 2-2 with good finishes from Newsam and particularly .
Not Very Athletic turned up with designs ov overtaking opposition Angel and securing 9th place in the league. However it was Angel who came out the stronger of the two. Prior to the game I had warned NVA that Marcel Veli was the man to watch in the Nagel team and so it was proven, with Veli bagging a hat-trick. Another goal from the Rich Bell and a reply from Harley of NVA left the score at 4-1, with angel the ones who secured 9th place.
NVA now have a final game v Reservoir Trogs next week – a good opportunity to work on their cup tactics!
The final game saw the battle to avaid bottom spot. Borussia teeth came into the match having only managed 1 point since taking over from Action force at the turn of the year. Black Sox had a spanking new kit and really looked the part, and confidence in the camp was sky high before kick off – this was surely going to be a cracker…
Well, maybe not. The game had its share of chances, good (and bad) tackles and some good saves. In the end it was a single goal from Crease for Borussia which secured 11th place and dropped Black Sox to the bottom of the pile – I see a new (bitter) rivalry brewing.
