Bridlington will host players from across the country at this weekend’s Bridlington Championships, taking place on Saturday, 3 July and Sunday, 4 July.

The event, which is sponsored and supported by East Yorkshire Events, is one of the biggest beach volleyball tournaments in the country and will attract over 400 competitors to the East Yorkshire coastline.

Conference and events manager for East Yorkshire Events, Paul Roggeman is looking forward to the event.

He said: “The Bridlington Open Beach Volleyball fits perfectly with our plans to re-establish Bridlington as ‘The Resort for ’ with the volleyball following on just a week after the town hosted the UKWA National Windsurfing Championships.

“The influx of approximately 500 people into the resort for a long weekend, provides a boost for local tourism and also adds great value for residents and visitors alike, offering the perfect opportunity to watch live sport for free whilst enjoying a day out at the seaside.”

The 2010 tournament will also see the addition of junior competitions for different age groups, from under 14 to under 17.

The tournament has also achieved EVA Beach Fest status and is one of a host of beach tournaments supported by the national association.

The tournament takes place at South Shore Beach, in front of the new Park and Ride car park.

Spectators are invited to come along and watch free of charge in what promises to be a fun family day out.

enjoyed a successful weekend at the recent MotoGP event at Silverstone.

Alex, from King’s Square, Beverley, riding his Honda RS250 in the ACU 250GP event, finished a creditable ninth in his event at a track he has not ridden at for 10 years.

It was even more worthy of praise since Alex hadn’t ridden Sean Kelly’s bike since the Gold Cup at Scarborough last year.

Despite a packed session on the Saturday, Alex qualified for the Sunday in 11th place out of 55 riders, although he admitted a clearer track on their flying lap could have seen him gain a front row place on the grid.

Alex said: “The race seemed to be over in a flash and we took the chequered flag in ninth, only a second down on sixth.

“Considering our lack of track knowledge and limited time on the bike we were very happy with the result.

“I have to say the new Silverstone GP circuit is absolutely fantastic to ride, it is very quick and flowing, even the slow corners link up well.”

Alex expects to be back in action at Cadwell Park on the weekend of August 7 and 8.

Rob Hunter was less then impressed with his own performance this week in the internal pool league as he was failed to win a match.

Micheal Duplock known to his friends and team mates as Massive was also given a one final chance by skipper the ‘Ginger Ox’ who labelled the player a ‘pretender’.

The Ox said;

“Massive is just not good enough, his brother is a far better player, we have tried to find other duties for Massive though he continues to let himself and the side down.”

“Micheal is more interested in his image as a barman making claims that he is the number one barman in Beverley. Pulling a pint is about all he can manage at the moment.”

Massive has already been axed from the Keel’s Humber Premier League team for a string of poor performances. He was given another role within the team away from the table as press officer and has failed miserably in this role too.

The OX added;

“We do not know what to do with him now, for a small man he has a big ego but lacks the skills to back it up.”

Gary Balchin of joined more than 1200 triathletes in the Canary Islands on Saturday 22 May to compete in the twentieth Lanzarote Ironman Triathlon.

Billed as “an unrivalled test of strength and character” and “probably the toughest Ironman race in the world”, the gruelling event started at seven in the morning in temperatures of 22 degrees.

The first activity was a 3.8km swim in the Atlantic Ocean off the tourist resort of Puerto del Carmen.  Water temperatures were around 20 degrees – slightly warmer than in Scarborough Bay where Balchin did his training!

After 2 laps of the swim course competitors hauled themselves out of the water, collected their bikes and set off on a 180km race around the island.  As if the distance was not enough to test the athletes, the profile of the course included 2551m of climbing!  Thankfully, conditions were not as windy as they had been in previous years.

The last discipline of this challenging event was a full marathon.  The running route consisted of three laps of a flat seafront course in Puerto del Carmen in temperatures of around 30 degrees – rather warm for marathon running but helped by a cooling breeze.

It was Balchin’s fourth visit to this event and although not as fast as in previous years he was pleased with his performance and suffered no problems afterwards.  His times for the three disciplines were 1.29.45 for the swim, 7.35.54 for the bike and 5.52.54 for the run.  His total time was 15.15.23 and he finished 174 / 195 in his age group.

1167 men finished the event and the winner was Eneko Llanos of Spain in an incredible 8 hours 37 minutes and 43 seconds.  There were 112 female competitors and the first to finish was Catriona Morrison of Scotland in an amazing 10 hours 3 minutes and 53 seconds.
