CC 3rd XI 189 for 9

HICE 146 all out

The 3rd XI completed the double over HICE when they ran out winners by 43 runs at Norwood. Batting first RJ Thompson and Rich Moon both made 14 before Will Wilson produced an excellent half century, packed with classy shots, before holing out with the total on 107 for 6.

It was left to a strong lower order led by Harry Bardon to recover the situation. He made 32 and scored 24 before an unbroken tenth wicket stand of 35 between Sam Horton (22 no) and (9 no) lifted Town to a respectable 189 for 9.

At 84 for 2 HICE looked set for a comfortable win but captain put in a great spell of 5 for 19 for from eleven overs to wreck the visitors chances of securing full points. Bardon (2-28), Horton (1-12) and Brumfield (1-47) all played their part as HICE were bowled out for 143 but it was O’Brian, making amends for his golden duck earlier in the day, who stole the show with his excellent spell.

Wilson had a very good day in the field with two catches and a run out to accompany his 50 runs to compete with O’Brian for the man of the match honour.

CC 2nd XI 173 all out

Pocklington took first use of another superb batting track at Norwood and posted 227 for 5 which proved far too many for a lacklustre . took 2 for 67 and there was a wicket apiece for John Lewis, and .

A succession of batsmen got a start but gave their wickets away, with the loose drive being a popular mode of dismissal.

It was left to Dobson (19) and Sugdon (31) to bring some respectability to proceedings before bowlers and Lewis tried to hold out for a draw. The former was caught behind with nine balls to spare to give Pocklington a deserved win.

At 13 for 3 Town looked like they might emulate their early season performance against the same team when they were shot out for less than 50.

A partnership of 79 between and Abid (44) rescued the situation, the players complementary styles serving them well. Jon Vodden hit two sixes in his 22 as he and Fish added 40 runs before Fish was seventh man out for 64 with the score on 169.

PSV all but sealed the title with yer another 4 goals display. this time is was the Trogs who were given a lesson in , with Wright smashing in his second hat-trick of the season.

At the wrong end the Trogs, who have been in real trouble all season, are confirmed as the bottom club and will be relegated next season – what would Kev Neale say?!!!

Inter buckle secured their thirs victory in 4 matches to move within 2pts of third place. Once again Dozer Durham was on the score sheet, with a second from Collingwood. For Weighton the season continues to get worse.

With only two games remaining, last years runners up and cup winners will need maximum points to avoid what will be a disaster of a campaign.

In the final game recorded their first victory in weeks to move them from sixth to third and to within 2pts of 110 above them. What seemed like a poor season has suddenly turned around in one game.

Dan Moore was the scorer, but suprisingly it was only his second goal of the season, after finishing last term as top scorer with over 20 goals.

Kennington hat-trick finally sees NVA beat Angel at the bottom, whilst Borussia are almost there at the top…

A Kennington hat-trick and one from Hebblethwaite saw NVA finally get one over Angel Athletic, to move them 4 points clear of their closest rival, with a game in hand. A poor first half was quickly forgotten after a rampage from Kennington which also sees him move up to second in the scorers chart.

Pat Crease kept his place at the top of the scorers chart with his weekly goal to put his team 6 points clear with two games in hand. One victory next will in their double header v AJ’s will see Borussia take the title. Mathmatically AJ’s can still win the league, but a second place finish is most likely, if they can get back on track next week.

Although it was only 2-0, MW Sunday took the Kinghts apart and looked very deserving of their second place position in the table. Goals from Broomfield and Elvidge were enough to secure victory, but the score could easily have been worse for the Knights. At one point Lee Medlin looked at his Captain and asked in exasperation ‘What more can I do?!’

The only saving grace for the Knights was the heavy defeat suffered by Angel. Their meeting in two weeks should now decide who finish rock bottom of the league

Results Wed 21 July: 0 v 1 Borussia Teeth; Angel 0 v 4 Not Very Athletic; MW Sunday 2 v 0 Beverley Knights

Swinemoor CC, aka The Kings Head were the winners of the annual Pub Sixes at Norwood.

The twenty-plus teams that took part in the competition showed enthusiasm, no mean skill and some inventive and unusual stroke play as they completed in group stages and then in knock-out format.

It was great to see some well-known local figures playing including local MP Graham Stuart, though it was noted that, when batting, he cuts far less often than his government.

The Kings Head were given early impetus by spiritual leader Gordon Gibson who made a tactical withdrawal in order to allow the rest of the younger, more agile squad to take part. Fielding several young players associated with Hull City AFC the winners were certainly given a head start in terms of athletic prowess and this paid off in the end.

They won their way into the final where they faced last year’s winners Hodgsons. This year’s final was however not a close affair as King’s Head posted 69 runs to Hodgson’s 39.

would like to say a big thank you to all the clubs and pubs that took part in the competition and thanks to all the club members who helped run the day. The funds raised allow the club to continue to develop their thriving junior section and to maintain and improve the facilities at Norwood at a time when the game is increasingly costly to support.

118 all out

120 for 0

Where the 3rd XI had pushed their Patrington counterparts all the way the 4th XI turned in a disappointing display at Norwood and was blown away by ten wickets.

Only opener (41) emerged with any credit as batsman after batsman, with perhaps only one or maybe two exceptions, gave their wickets away to leave Beverley 118 all out.

Under 17 player bowled with pace and control and was unlucky not to take a wicket in his seven overs which yielded just twelve runs. Fitzpatrick apart the visitors negotiated the remaining bowlers with relative comfort and cruised home in 26 overs without losing a wicket.

No points from this game and only two from the previous week means the 4ths will look to get back on track soon, starting on Sunday with a trip to HICE.

2nd XI 176 for 9

109 all out

Beverley 2nds arrived at Tadcaster to be greeted by a disappointing looking outfield and a damp wicket. The toss was clearly going to be important, and it was unfortunately lost by captain .

Beverley were invited to bat and proceeded to make a comfortable start, until the loss of to an unlucky LBW decision, which, to his credit, he took on the chin.

and put on 63 for the third wicket in good time until a wonder catch put paid to Spence for 40. Nobody else made much impression. Smith departed for a solid if unspectacular 57 and the innings closed on 176 for 9 which looked competitive.

The key was always going to be patience in the field. John Lewis, looking more like his old self, took two wickets in two balls in his fifth over as Town gathered momentum.

Tadcaster put together a couple of decent partnerships but , ably assisted by Steve Blake, broke the back of the oppositions batting to finish with a tremendous return of 5 for 23 from 12 overs.

Blake and Lewis finished with two wickets apiece to help the 2nd team back into the pack in Division 2. A word must go to for pulling off an outrageous one handed catch off a skier on the long on boundary. One of the highlights of the season so far!

CC 1st XI 174 all out
Goole 98 all out

recorded an impressive 76 run win at against Goole Town. Boosted by the return of Jamie Mitchell, back at the club until the end of the 2010 season, Town fielded a strong batting line up and might have expected to rack up a big score.

It was not be as a combination of the conditions and some good slow bowling saw Beverley total just 174 all out.

It was Mitchell who led the way with 40 after , in a rich vein of form, had given Beverley a steady start with 35 runs at the top of the order. There were also useful contributions from Jon Fisher (23) and (23).

(5-32) took early wickets and (2-24), restored to the 1st XI in the absence of veteran Simon Roe, also had early success. swapped his bowlers around and when Goole offered signs of a revival it was occasional bowler Mitchell (3-7) who claimed two wickets to pile the pressure back on the visitors.

Beverley eventually prevailed with the help of two catches, a Hesford style diving effort by keeper Alan Acklam and a tumbling one, remarkably the second in three games, by fielding wizard . Goole were bowled out for 98 in the 46th over.

Beverley, by virtue of a very good recent run of form has moved into seventh place, above Goole and Stamford Bridge. Their resolve will now be tested in a tough run of games when they meet followed by Dunnington and Clifton Alliance, the current top three in the York Premier Division.

HRH The Duchess of Cornwall met with the members of the equestrian community in Brixton, London, yesterday (21st July 2010) at an Open Day of the Ebony Horse Club charity of which she is President.

Her visit included a tour of the area in Wyck Gardens that, once approximately £500,000 is raised, is destined to become stabling, a riding school, and a classroom for members of the Club, right in the centre of one of the most challenging places to live in London.

The British Equestrian Federation, of which the Duchess is a patron, has already committed some £200,000 of finance secured through England, to the £1.7million project.

Andrew Finding of the BEF gave an impromptu, impassioned speech as to just why the BEF were so keen to endorse and support this project as part of its HOOF Ride London, Olympic Legacy Project.

He said, “The Club is proven to change lives and has the capacity, through this proposed riding school, to reach many more children. By being involved at this level, our sport will hit into the heart of London and, in light of the London 2012 Olympic Games, make a lasting difference.”

“I urge all in our sport to join us and pledge their support to the Club”, he added, with the Club grateful of donations, great and small.
Saroj Chakravarty, a patron of many Royal charities and his wife Mandirar, were so inspired they made a donation to the Club on the day – Saroj having retired from international business to support principally, The Prince’s Trust, leading to HRH The Prince of Wales, naming international polo match, The Chakravarty Cup, in his honour.

Equestrian enthusiasts in attendance included Rosemary Barlow, who won the BHS Queen’s Award for Equestrianism this year for her fundraising activities via the Horse Trials Support Group and for her part in building relationships and greater understanding throughout the whole equine community.

The premise of using horses to teach five key social skills; punctuality, regular attendance, commitment to improvement, team work and exam preparation, in order to achieve beyond their expectations, struck a chord and she was joined by fellow event horse owner, Ann Walkinshaw, daughter-in-law of Nick Walkinshaw, the owner of Billy Shannon, ridden by Pippa Funnell.

Sir David Steel and his wife, Charlotte, were also among those present – Charlotte having been known to drive the minibus that currently takes the members across London to their riding lessons, and during the open day she demonstrated how to put on a tail bandage on the Club’s plastic horse.

And, Lady Heseltine, being introduced to the Club for the first time, spoke of how she felt inspired to offer the Club a chance to visit and ride from her farm in Exmoor.

Such an opportunity would be a world away from the stables, surrounded as it will be, by high-rise residential buildings that are home to many of the Ebony Horse Club’s members – children from the age of 12-19 – who are readily exposed to poverty, poor educational achievement, social exclusion and crime.

In the days running up to the Open Day, five children were involved in a shooting incident, and the families of the members and those involved in the local community spoke of how the Club has turned the lives of many children otherwise branded, ‘too difficult’, around.

It was also noted that, although to the country equestrian community, the costs involved in building and running such a Club may seem high, it would inspire the area to be regenerated, prevent crime and was cheaper, per capita, than holding a child in a youth detention centre while also offering them much needed opportunities and a way out, with many former Club members going on to University and even careers in the equine industry.

After Jordans 80mph crash at Snetterton on the 10th July in the , we had to work late nights all week to get Jordans 80cc GP race bike ready for rounds 3 & 4 at the 3-sisters race track Wigan with Prestondmc, were Jordan would be competing in the F125cc & Junior classes despite only been on a 80cc GP Conti race bike.

Mentally Jordan seemed unfazed, and despite the very wet track conditions, he was lapping consistently. Jordan was still having to take things slow due to the fact that his race engine had to be rebuilt after last weekends disaster at Snetterton and had to be run in first before he could start pushing hard to get his lap times down.

At the Lunch break we had a check over the bike and Jordan asked if we could set the bike up to be a bit softer into the tight twisty corners and also complained that it wasn’t pulling away as quick as the first time he rode at the track in June were he managed a 3rd place trophy in the Junior class.

So we changed Tyres and air pressure and also changed the bike gearing. Back on track for the afternoon practise sessions Jordans times were dropping, and eventually he was lapping at approx 4 sec a lap quicker that he had been in the morning.

Saturday race day F125cc Trophy race Jordan pulled number 12 out of the bag, meaning he was starting 12th  on the grid out of 19 riders, all on bigger bikes as Jordan was the only rider in the race on an 80cc Machine.

Despite his grid position he managed to carve his way through the field upto 4th place with 1 lap to go. On the last corner Jordan kept the pressure on the rider in front and was now level with the other bike going round the right-hander, with Jordan taking the tighter inside line.

Both bikes were now coming onto the straight, Jordan just managing to get the best line out of the corner and drag his bike over the line to take a very impressive 3rd place Trophy.

Jordan also came 2nd in the Junior class on Saturday and Sunday again despite been the only Junior on an 80cc Machine.

If you would like help in anyway, however small please contact.

PSV have all but confirmed their position as champions, neading only 3 points from three games to leave ONE10 neading to win all three of their remaining games and overall a huge goal difference.

The game between PSV v was a tight affair, with both teams playing some decent and defending really well, meaning chances were kept to a minimum. Chris East in the Waterside goal was the busier of the two keepers, making a couple of decent saves.

PSV took the lead after a tidy finish from Burke, but Waterside replied within minutes through Davidson.

Waterside then almost toom the lead, as Danny Moore smashed a swerving free kick round the wall and onto the PSV post. Gav in nets was then very relieved to see the ball bounce back off the post, onto his leg and out for a corner, when it could easily have rolled into the open net. This seemed to give PSV a boost, and with less than 2 minutes to go, a long ball up front found the unmarked Wiggle Wright, who took his time and slotted a neat finish past the Waterside keeper Chris East at his near post for the win.

Weighton Utd didn’t seem their usually passing selves in the first half against Trogs and the Trogs took advantage of this, creating several good chances. In the sencond half Trogs took the lead with a scorcherfrom Fry that smashed the underside of the bar on its way in. Weighton did not give up though and Bennett managed to get a goal for them after a good move. Of the two teams, Weighton will feel luckier to have gone home with a point.

The final game saw on the wrong end of a ONE10 thumping. Although Mike dixon had a solid game at the back for , ONE10 still managed to create a hatful of chances and bagged 4 goals (2 for Brannan, 2 for Lown).

BarceHullona did respond with a consolation goal, after quick thinking and a quickly taken free kick saw Mot clip the ball home of the underside of the bar, but Stany will have been disappointed with the team performance and the result.

The Barca bays are definately missing the link play and creativity of the injured . ONE10 have their work cut out now to reach to top, but second place will be the Best finish of any Forces side in history, and I’m sure the boys will compete to the last whistle to try and over turn PSV at the top.

Results Wed 14 July: Waterside 1 v 2 PSV Hangover; BarceHullona 1 v 4 ONE10; Weighton Utd 1 v 1 Reservoir Trogs

Fixtures Wed 21 July: PSV Hangover v Reservoir Trogs 7pm; Inter Buckle v Weighton Utd 7pm; Waterside v BarceHullona 7pm

Over 500 amateur cyclists took part in the Cyclosportive around East Yorkshire last Saturday.

Organised by Hull Thursday RC and Paul Kilvington, the popular event filled up within days of entries opening.

Cyclists had a choice of 3 distances – 60km (37 miles), 100km (62 miles) or 160km (99 miles).  The challenging routes followed rural roads with little traffic and covered some of the route of the East Yorkshire Classic event for professional cyclists the following day.

All three routes featured challenging climbs and stunning views of the countryside.   Hills at Thixendale, Millington and Nunburnholme were a serious test of stamina and determination but there were also a number of steep descents where cyclists could take it easy and freewheel.

The Big G is not a race but a challenge event where participants are classified according to their finishing time as gold, silver or bronze.

Cyclists from local clubs were well represented in the event but there was also a large number of people new to the .  16 members of also took part.  Club President, got off to a bad start when the bolt attaching his saddle to his bike snapped at .  He was forced to ride the three miles back to Beverley standing up and buy a new bolt.  After securing his seat he started again and achieved silver standard in the 100km distance.

Whatever the standard achieved everyone had an enjoyable day out on the Wolds and felt a great sense of achievement at the finish.

Top health and fitness guru Angie Best is demonstrating her support for by accepting an Ambassador role for the . “I have a deep love of horses, ride myself and am fully aware of the health and fitness benefits of doing so,” says Angie, who also runs her own horse sanctuary.

After living in Los Angeles where she built a high-powered career helping stars such as Cher, Britt Ekland and Priscilla Presley create personal fitness regimes, Angie recently relocated to Henley-on-Thames and opened an innovative new fitness centre which incorporates the high standards of LA customer service and with a touch of laid-back California lifestyle.

As the former wife of legend George Best, Angie has long been an advocate of women’s independence. “I’ve always believed a woman should aspire to be an individual in her own right,” she maintains. “A relationship in which someone chooses to be with you, rather than you choosing to be with them because they’re a sporting star is a true relationship of equals.”

It’s partly this philosophy that attracts her to her new ambassador role. “Equestrianism is one of the very few, if not only, sports where men and women compete equally on the global stage” she explains. “To have women taking on men head-to-head for prize money in the tens of thousands is not only thrilling to watch but extremely empowering and I think many people miss the excitement of this.

“Recently, we had a Battle of the Sexes at Hickstead when Guy and Tina Fletcher had to jump off for the lion’s share of the £124,000 prize fund. The spectators were totally divided as to who they wanted to win. This, along with the power, speed and general majestic appeal of horse and rider competing together is what makes show jumping the superb and compelling sport it is and why I’m delighted to be able to show my support publicly as Ambassador”.

Interest in Show Jumping is has risen dramatically in recent years with the sport enjoying extensive broadcast coverage and fans flocking to spectator events. And with prize money often exceeding £500,000 the stakes are higher than ever. Great Britain recently saw one of its most successful competition horses win in excess of £1million – a target that looks increasingly achievable for other horses during their careers.

“Angie is so enthusiastic both about our sport and helping us to reach a wider audience that it is an absolute pleasure to be welcoming her as an Ambassador,” explains Maria Clayton of British . “We feel extremely fortunate that she is supporting us in this way and we look forward to not only working alongside Angie but also, her joining us at key events through the year when many of Britain’s leading riders are competing on the International stage”.

In a compelling game against AJ’s things looked to be going as normal, as Nick Rawnsley slotted home a well taken goal after a great move to give AJ’s a 1-0 advantage. However 2 moments of magic from Angel ‘Xavi’ Garcis helped Angel finally manage a win.

The first of their two goals came from an beautiful pass by Garcia, who slotted a perfectly weighted ball between three AJ’s defenders and into the path of new addition Farrell, who somehow rounded the keeper to dink home at an even tighter angle than Rawnsley’s earlier goal.

The winner came from Rich Bell, again with an asist (of a kind) from Garcia. With two minutes to go, Farrell squared a ball which was struck well by Bell and saved equally well by Mike Williamson in the AJ’sl goal. this led to Angel barracking Belly for not leaving the shot for him, even though Belly had done everything but score, was completely unmarked as he struck and was closer to the goal!!!

Belly was so exasperated by Angel’s rantings that he smashed the resultant corner from Farrell into the top left of the AJ’s goal to prove his points and for the first Angel winner in… well… months!

NVA started well against MW with good passing play which reslted in 3 or 4 decent changes, but were unable to find the back of the net. The pressure didnt last long as MW found their stride and Elvidge got a decisive goal for the boys from Weighton. After half-time MW Sunday peppered NVA’s goal and were unluckynot to get another goal with the NVA’s goal keeper making some crucial saves to keep them out.

Elvidge nearly got a second from a freekick that thundered off the cross bar and Carlin showed some class skill late on and was unlucky not to get a goal. NVA will need to find a victory against Angel next week to avaoing slipping in previously well known teritory; second bottom!

The fianl game saw v Beverley Knights, with new referee Bill Grieve standing in for Uzzell, who was busy supping continental lager in Belgium. Bill described the game as a joy to referee, with both teams choosing to concentrate on the rather than each other. In a shake up to the Knights squad, the brothers Medlin were deployed up front and almost had an immediate impact.

The fact that between them they managed 6 shots during the game (which is about double what the Knights have managed all season!) shows it was a sound tactical chose by captain Sanders.

But, as has been the case for the Knights all season, they couldn’t find the much needed breakthrough and is was Deportivo, with a cool finish from Firth, who walked away with all 3 points, to send Knights to the bottom of the table. The games v NVA (28/7) & Angel (4/8) are now massive for Sanders et al
