Great Britain’s Children fail to disappoint as they are bringing home Team Gold from the European Championships for the fourth year running. The 2010 Championships are taking place in Jardy, France near Paris where our Children’s team, aged 14 years and under have given an outstanding performance showing once again the incredible talent we have coming up through our sport.
With three of our team of four giving foot-perfect clears in the first round and only one team member having an unfortunate four faults we were already lying in equal first with six other teams who were all on zero (the three best scores count with the fourth being a drop score).
Prior to the fourteen teams coming forward to contest the second round in which Great Britain were drawn seventh to go, the fifth team members rode for their individual scores. It was thirteen year old Charlotte Smet riding Louise Morley’s 10 year old liver Chestnut gelding Maneken du Coty who as fifth man showed the team what needed to by producing a superb clear.
First to go for Great Britain in the teams second round was 14 year old Katie Robertson from Cupar, Fife with Lynne Robertsons 9 year bay gelding Cameron Poe, followed by 13 year old Christie Pritchard from Holyhead with Allen Tredwell’s nine year old grey mare Larkspur. With both Katie and Christie producing text book clear rounds. 14 year old Jake Saywell from Newark knew that if he produced a clear round with Ann Gascoine’s 9 year old grey gelding Cornelius 27 there was a very good chance that Great Britain would secure Gold. Producing exactly this, and as other teams faulted after us we were in a position of knowing we had won the Gold even before our fourth team member 13 year old Millie Allen from Stockton-On-Tee’s had jumped.
With scores from both rounds counting towards qualifying for the Individual Championships, Millie jumped, proved her worth and the depth of talent within Great Britain by producing another clear with Rachel Steel’s 10 year old bay mare Trueleva.
Michael Mac, Chairman for British Showjumping commented from Jardy “All five children jumped absolutely fantastically and are a real credit to Great Britain. Keeping their nerve whilst other’s fell apart the children were mature beyond their years and I feel extremely fortunate to be here with them today and proud of the sport in which we are all involved and feel so passionate about”.
Corinne Bracken, Chef d’equipe and Team Coach further commented “The four riders in the team today were outstanding, the course was much bigger in the second round and where the other teams failed to jump clears, ours just rose to the occasion. Before the second round of the teams had started, our fifth rider Charlotte Smet, showed us exactly what to do within the new time allowed which was ten seconds less than the first round. I’m incredibly proud of the team here today and would like to give a special thanks to the fantastic support crowd that we have at this Championship”.
With all five of the British Children qualifying for the Individual Final, which takes place on Saturday afternoon, Great Britain look in a strong position going forward.
The first of the Junior Team Competitions will take place later on today with the Team Final on Friday 16th. The Individual Final will commence on Sunday 18th July.
The Young Rider Team Competition will take place tomorrow (Friday 16th) with their Individual Final taking place on Sunday 18th July.
HU17.net has embarked on an exciting new venture with the launch of our Beverley Sport Magazine.
The pilot of what we hope can become a permanent addition to the sporting landscape of Beverley was printed yesterday, and has been placed in locations around the time in a bid to raise the profile of local sports clubs and the HU17.net websites.
It will be printed in small numbers initially, but hopefully interest will enable us to print it in larger numbers in future.
The first edition features Beverley footballer and cricketer Stew Scott on the front page, and carries superb pictures from six sporting events that have taken place over the past week. The centre spread, which will be a special poster, features the Ray Speckman Cup Final winning Beverley ARLFC team.
HU17.net founder and owner Paul Smith said: “We wanted to find a way of putting our pictures and brand in front of people who may not be aware of the coverage we give to sport on a local level.
“The response has been very good and amendments will be made in issue two based on the feedback we have had from people around town.
“There is currently no editorial in the magazine as it focuses fully on images. It is what we are good at so it is what we will stick with. We will, however, see how we can add more captions and visuals to the pages.
“Hopefully this is something people will keep and not discard. There is no compromise on quality with all 16 pages being printed on a high quality glossy paper.”
Work on the second issue is already under way and it will be out shortly after the weekend.
It is hoped that over time advertisers and local sponsors can be found which will increase the numbers published. For now, though, the focus is on delivering a quality product on time on a weekly basis.
Paul continued: “We have plans to do a total of four issues, which will take us upto the to start of the football season.
“From there we will assess the situation and finalise a frequency and viability.”
Please contact us with any feedback or improvements you would like to see in future publications.

A fine performance from Cherry’s young all rounder Rob Talbot along with three stunning slip catches from Ashley Godber were the highlights of a hard fought derby clash when Dalton Holme hosted Cherry Burton last Saturday in the East Riding Independent League Div 2 with the visitors holding their nerve to win by one wicket in a tense finish.
Cherry never allowed their hosts to build any substantial partnerships with Talbot striking through the top order with 3-26 with Godber and Terry Ventress chipping with a couple of wickets a peice at the end to close out the Dalton innings on 103.
In reply Cherry struggled against Dalton’s opening bowlers Kingdom and Gamble and at 34-5 it looked like the points were going to the home side.
Talbot came to the wicket and playing with a combination of sound defence and clean hitting held the innings together before falling for 30.
With 3 still needed and the last pair of at the wicket Dalton’s bowlers applied the pressure with 4 consecutive maiden overs. The deadlock was broken when Godber scrambled a single and after a bye Shawal cover drove a 4 to take Cherry home to a memorable victory.
Dalton Holme 103 all out A Bailey 20 R Talbot 3-26 T Ventress 2-0 Godber 2-18
Cherry Burton 107-9 R Talbot 30 J Law 14 A Kingdom 3-40 M Gamble 3-21

The Newland Tuesday evening side won through to the final of the Phoenix Cup with an exciting one run win over Humbleton at Norwood.
Iain Gillyon was in magnificent form displaying a full range of shots in a superb 90 not out. Fellow opener Kieran O’Brian made a fine half century before Ben Fish (17 no) pushed the score on to take Beverley to an impressive 179 for 1 from 13 eight-ball overs.
Humbleton, with a strong Yorkshire League based batting line-up pushed Beverley all the way.
Amongst the home bowlers, Matt Mudd (3-41) bowled well before youngster Matt Novis (1-37) bowled a tight last over under great pressure which saw Beverley winners by the narrowest of margins with the visitors on 178 for 5.
The final takes place at Hull Zingari on Tuesday July 27th.
Beverley 4th XI lost to Hull & YPI 3rd XI by 165 runs
Hull & YPI 286 for 6
4th XI 121 all out
The 4th XI were brought back down to earth when they were hammered by 165 runs by runaway leaders Hull & YPI III at Norwood.
The home bowlers failed to exploit a bowler-friendly track as Appleyard made an undefeated century for Hull.
Sam Welburn took 2 for 56 for Beverley as they toiled in the heat. Too many wides and no-balls meant Town were in the field longer than necessary and the fielding suffered too.
For the first time in recent weeks the 4ths batting line-up disappointed and, as Hull used the crumbling surface to their advantage, Town could only manage 121 all out leaving them without a single batting bonus point.
Dave Parry (23) was the highest scorer and there were contributions from Neil Goforth (20), and juniors Josh Guzdek (18) and Rob Wicks (14) but no batsman was able to make the big score required to salvage something from the game.
Despite a poor day the 4ths can reflect on the last four games where they have played the top four in the league and only lost once. The run continues when they entertain second-placed Patrington followed by a trip to the team in fourth, HICE, in a rare Sunday fixture.
Beverley 3rd XI beat North Ferriby 1st XI by 4 wickets
North Ferriby 178 all out
3rd XI 181 for 6
The 3rds made it three out of three when they travelled to bottom of the table North Ferriby.
A rejuvenated side returned with twenty points in the bag after a four-wicket win, father and son Ali and Guy Brumfield figuring prominently.
The home side won the toss and elected to bat and Beverley opened with Brad Dobson and Guy Brumfield. It was the latter who was again in-form, taking 4 for 19. Dobson took 2 for 30 and Sam Horton took 2 for 66 and Alex Nightingale was utilized as a fifth bowler, claiming useful middle order wickets to end with 2 for 17 from eight overs.
Ferriby closed on 178 all out after Brumfield removed three of the tail-enders.
Beverley were reduced to 33 for 3 at one stage with Rich Moon making 19. After a brief flurry of runs by Rob Todd a partnership of 75 between Ali Brumfield, back on the field after injury, and Phil Du Boulay put Town in charge.
Another player returning from injury, James Emery, then made valuable runs as, after Brumfield’s eventual dismissal for 56, Du Boulay went on to make 37.
Beverley passed the Ferriby total with six wickets down, Emery unbeaten on 31.
A sterner task awaits the 3rds when they travel to Patrington who sit proudly at the top of the Premier Division.
Beverley 2nd XI beat New Earswick by 9 wickets
New Earswick 139 all out
2nd XI 143 for 1
Beverley Town 2nd Xl gained a much needed win, at home to New Earswick, on Saturday.
The visitors won the toss and elected to bat first on a boiling hot day.
They struggled to 139 all out as Beverley put together their best fielding display of the season.
Matthew Mudd (3-48 from 17 overs) bowled well, and both Jon Lewis and Nick Robinson put in good efforts, but the main wicket taker was Iain Sugdon. He finished with the excellent figures of 6 for 19 including five clean bowled victims, reward for bowling full and straight.
In reply Beverley had an early scare when opener Pete Hynes ducked into a bouncer and had to retire hurt in only the second over. Tim Smith was joined at the wicket by the consistent Ian Goforth and they took the score to 66 before Smith was out for 28.
This spurred Goforth on, and he began to unleash some glorious strokes. Paul Best played a cameo supporting role as Goforth hit an undefeated match-winning 75 to give the 2nds their first win for a month.
Ed Chamberlin reveals his tips for promotion as he looks ahead to the new domestic football season.
