135 for 8 CC 1st XI 114 all out

The 1st XI were asked, once again, to chase a low total but this week they were unable to reach their target losing valuable points and momentum in their bid to get away from near the foot of the Premier League.

(3-38) and Steve Blake (3-21) were the main wicket takers as the home side were restricted to 135 for 8 from their 50 overs on a surface that offered the bowlers some assistance.

Another poor batting performance saw several Beverley players get a start but none go on to produce a significant innings. Among those who made some progress were (16), Jon Fisher (23) and Jon Vodden (24). Captain was left stranded on 16 as his side was bowled out for a paltry 114. Town now looks forward to an important weekend where, on Bank Holiday Monday, they face Stamford Bridge, who lie just one place above them in the Premier league.

Veteran marathon runner of travelled to the Isle of Man last week to take part in the annual marathon organised by the Isle of Man Veterans Club.

Although only a small marathon with 111 finishers, the standard was high and several course records were broken.

Watkinson won third prize in the V55 age category, finishing 28th overall in 3.23.56.  The course record for this age group was broken by Dave Potter of Leamington C & AC who finished in 2.55.04.

Competing for the second time in this event, Watkinson commented that the race is friendly and well organised, “everyone got a big cheer as they crossed the finishing line in Ramsey football stadium.”

The marathon followed an undulating scenic route along the coast in the north of the island and incorporated some of the TT route.  Runners were welcomed back with a huge buffet after the race.

A new course record was set by the winner, Ian Mcilwee. He completed the 26 mile course in 2.46.51.

The Beverley CC 4th XI completed the double over bottom of the table Wawne when they won by five wickets at Hodgsons. The home side was asked to bat first on a damp wicket which played surprisingly well.

However, Wawne were restricted to a modest 138 all out, this after they made a good start when the opening bowlers gave away too many extras and generally bowled too many four balls. Sam Horton had the best return of 4 for 36 and there were three wickets each for (3-28) and Jamie Nowell (3-26). took three catches and young keeper Rob Fish claimed his sixteenth victim of the season.

Beverley made an indecisive start with only (18) and Will Smith (13) in double figures as, with five wickets down, only half of the required runs had been scored.

(46 no) and Rob Fish (20 no) eased any worries with an unbroken partnership of 72. The target was reached with almost nine overs to spare and saw the 4ths record their sixth twenty point maximum of the season.

The got back to winning ways with an impressive win over fourth placed Sutton at Norwood. Beverley batted first and was made to work hard on the rain affected wicket. RJ Thompson proved to be the mainstay of the Town innings hitting five fours and three sixes in scoring exactly 50. Tim Fordon (42) was the other main contributor to the Beverley innings and good support came from (15), (19) and Harry Bardon (23 no). Beverley’s total of 180 for 7 was a very good effort on a difficult wicket.

Sutton’s reply started steadily enough with 34 on the board before the first wicket fell. and then proceeded to work their way through the visitors batting line up and in the course of their twelve overs apiece Sutton lost nine wickets. Brumfield (5-58) took his second five wicket haul of the season and O’Brian took 4 for 37 and some excellent ground fielding and catching, with two for Paul Fleming and Kevin Thompson, offered superb support.

Emery joined the attack and wasted little time in removing the last man, giving Beverley a comprehensive win over a side who they have struggled to beat in recent years.

The 1st XI secured a valuable win at home to bottom of the table Thirsk, but only by the narrowest of margins. , reinstated to the team after almost 200 runs in the last four games for the 2nd XI, was the batting star of the day but not before veteran Simon Roe had produced a superb bowling spell to set up the win.

Beverley reduced their youthful North Yorkshire visitors to 58 for 7and then 73 for 8 but some determined lower order resistance allowed Thirsk to reach 134 for 9 from their 50 overs. Roe produced a remarkable effort in recording figures of 18-7-22-5.

Although this was only a modest total Beverley were soon in trouble at 20 for 4 and the target began to look much more ominous. A major recovery was brought about by a partnership of 64 between inform batsmen Spence and (25) but another batting collapse saw Town reduced to 98 for 8. Enter the redoubtable Roe.

Not content with his marathon bowling stint he added 33 with Spence before succumbing to the slow bowler for 16. The excellent Spence remained undefeated on 54 when number 11 Mudd struck the winning runs.

Bridlington sports student Ben Johnson has been selected to represent Yorkshire under-18s for the 2010/2011 season.

The 17-year-old, who has just completed the First Diploma in at East Riding College and broke into the Bridlington RUFC first team last season, will tour Ireland with the regional squad from August 22.

Ben, who plays at centre, said: “It has been a great year for me, as I have represented my club’s first team and won the Yorkshire Shield with them, and have been chosen to tour with the Yorkshire Terriers to and Namibia.

“Now, to be selected to represent Yorkshire under-18s is a great honour. This is a four-day tour which will be a great experience, playing against tough opposition.”

Ben, who hopes to become a professional player or a gym instructor, was one of the top try scorers in the College team last season. The new season starts with a tour to Ireland this month before the Yorkshire team take on Lancashire, Cheshire and Northumberland in September and October. The final three matches will be observed by north of England and England selectors.

Ben has also been selected for the 22-day tour of South Africa and Namibia in 2011 with the Yorkshire Terriers RFC, the “Barbarians of English youth rugby”. The trip will feature five matches, in venues such as Port Elizabeth, Cape Town and Windhoek, as well as a sevens tournament.

Tutor Abigail Fearn said: “Ben is a talented player and his selection for the Yorkshire under-18s and the Yorkshire Terriers is a reward for all the hard work he has put in over the past year.

“We all wish him the best of luck during these representative tours and matches, and hope he catches the eye of the England selectors.”

195 or 8 – Malton & Old Malton 182 for 8

Division 2 title challengers Malton & Old Malton were the visitors to Norwood and a tight game left the 2nd XI with 26 points from a draw. An opening stand of 57 between (51) and (19) gave Beverley a good start.

When Smith was out with the total on 101 took command and made an excellent 69 before falling at 163 for 5. Captain made 24 as Town reached 195 for 8.

and opened the bowling and both bowled with pace. It was the former who claimed the first three wickets to fall before Jon Lewis (1-26) chipped in to leave the visitors at 90 for 4.

Further wickets fell to the returning Dobson (1-39), Robinson and to slow bowler (1-38) as Malton got closer to their target. Robinson, however, snapped up the eighth wicket to fall to register a well deserved first five-wicket haul (5-69) for the 2nd XI and the visitors played out their overs for the draw at 182 for 8.

This was almost a full strength 2nd XI and, although they would probably have liked another 20 or 30 runs on a good batting surface, they played much more to their potential and performed well in getting the better of a side near the top of the league.

The Beverley CC 4th XI took eight points from a drawn game with Sutton at Norwood. Beverley’s bowlers did not have their best day apart from Tim Fordon who took 1 for 30 in ten overs on his 4th XI debut. Sutton made the most of their opportunities and registered 217 for 4 from a reduced allocation of 40 overs.

Other wickets came from Jamie Nowell, who bowled a very good opening spell, Jamie Roe and .
