Little Bishop Burton College are making a name for themselves, not just in the world of equestrianism as you might expect, but at .

Having set up an Academy 18 months ago, in order to attract good young players to their degree courses at the College, they have set about moving up the Universities and Colleges Leagues, playing against universities with 20+ times more students to select from.Unbeaten for three years now, they faced their biggest challenge recently when they went up to Durham University to play their unbeaten 3rd team.

The Durham team consisted wholly of players with county representation. Bishop Burton played against a strong wind in the first half and had to be at their best defensively. Durham scored with a converted try in the 10th minute and then followed up with a penalty after 30 minutes. The teams changed round with Bishop losing 10 points to nil.

After 10 minutes of the 2nd half Bishop were awarded a penalty 38 yards out which was converted, then five minutes later followed up with a try out wide, which was again converted. The scores were locked at 10 all until eight minutes from time when Bishop scored the match winning try and conversion. The final score was a 17 points to 10 win for the Bishop Burton Academy which gives them a two point lead at the top of Division 2B North of the Universities and Colleges Union.

The standard of play from both sides was a credit to the game. Bishop Burton’s defence was excellent all over the field and with a little more attacking composure could have scored more tries.
The following week Bishop Burton went to to play in the Northern Conference Cup against Met Carnegie 4th team and came away winners by 53 points to seven.

This week the team are up in the north east to play Newcastle University 2nds in the league. Home games are played Bishop Burton College on a Wednesday afternoon with a 2.00pm kick off. Next week, 14th December, the team have a home game against Leeds Met Carnegie 3rd team in thelast 16 round of the Cup.

Tickton Cougars travelled to Hessle to play Hessle Rangers Juniors. With both teams unbeaten in the league a tough game was anticipated. Tickton went ahead within 90 seconds with a pinpoint ball through the middle clinically slotted between the posts.

Undaunted Hessle pressed forward looking for the equaliser and in a 10-15 minute spell, spent mainly in the midfield and tickton half, the Tickton team soaked up everything Hessle attempted and only long range shots threatened the Tickton goal. Playing 4,4,2 the well organised, disciplined and committed cougars weathered the Hessle storm and playing good down both wings and through the middle dominated the last 15 minutes scoring a further 4 goals.

spirited Hessle kept battling and a well struck shot from the edge of the Tickton box found its way through the Tickton defence giving the Tickton keeper no chance. Hessle, still believing they could get back into the game before the break, brought out a stunning save from the excellent Tickton keeper, a long range thunderbolt of a shot, seemed destined for the back of the net, keeper Galloway threw himself through the air, back arched, to tip the ball over the bar, drawing gasps from both sets of supporters and players.

Half time Hessle 1 Tickton 5

The second half saw both teams playing good attacking football. Tickton found the net twice more and brought some great saves from the Hessle keeper. Hessle tested the resilient Tickton and on a couple of occasions Tickton scrambled the ball out of their 6 yard box to ensure they kept a clean second half sheet.

Hessle were without their regular keeper through injury, but the lad who played in goal deserved credit for some great shot stopping to keep the tickton score down.

The Tickton lads today were excellent taking everything they are taught on the training ground and using it all in this game. The things you cannot teach, commitment and team spirit, were ,as always, in abundance throughout this excellent squad.

Full time Hessle 1 – 7

Scorers:-Wilkinson 4, Edgcumbe 1, Oxley 1 o.g.1

Mill Lane Under 10 Girls continued their winning run with a hard fought victory over Hessle Town Girls on a cold and windy day at Broadgates playing fields.

The home team were unchanged from last week and pressured the Hessle defence from the kick-off.

For the majority of the first half Mill Lane were camped in Hessle’s half of the pitch and eventually, after some wayward shooting, took the lead through Hope Barrett. With some excellent passing from Chloe Davison and superb running from Isobel Gillyon and Millie Gray the pressure on Hessle was unrelenting. When they did manage to break Ellie Macmillan put in some fantastic covering tackles to stifle the Hessle attack and Chloe Hakeney pulled off some fine saves to deny them a goal.

It wasn’t long before more sustained pressure on the Hessle goal allowed Connie Forward to double the lead.

The second half couldn’t have been more different. Hessle hit the ground running and exploited the full width of the pitch, reversing the pressure they had felt in the first half and getting in behind the Mill Lane defence. Hessle scored a deserved goal with excellent covering defence from Isobel Gillyon preventing them from scoring more. Mill Lane saw their chances fall into the safe hands of the Hessle keeper.

The end-to-end continued up until the final whistle, bringing to an end an exciting game with Mill Lane hanging on as 2-1 victors.

On a blustery yet sunny Sunday newly formed Development team comprising of some new players and some experienced players took on their second match of the season away against Hessle . They too had some new players therefore it was an ideal fixture for both sides.
Beverley took the lead with a great run from number 8 Jake Walker with a fast turn of pace he sprinted over the try line.

It was never going to be a day for kicks as the forces of nature made sure and made it more than a difficult job for Niall Carruthers to convert.

The forward pack of Paul Christmas, Tom Meagher and Jack Bolton moved the Hessle pack back giving space for the ball to move out to the experienced hands of Jack Garvin who added another 5 points to the try list. Scrum half Stephen Price ensured quick movement of the ball foraging from scrums and flicking out to Rory and the ever present Niall Carruthers.

Ian White and George Butterworth took on tackles and rucks releasing the ball to give Ryan Braithwaite a free run to the try line . Scrums a plenty kept the ball low with Elliot Fletcher Wilkin and Matt Levine putting on the Hessle side . In a sea of green the two packs fought for possession only to see it taken to the ground and picked up by Joshua Felgate who sneaked it in for a well deserved try.

The tackles continued with Hessle trying hard to take Beverley down with some hard hitting manouveres this did not deter Paul Christmas who powered over the try line .Into the second half and Ryan Braithwaite made a fantastic run straight down the middle of the pitch brushing off the opposition he scored again.

Hessle were determined to score and made use of the talent on their side , number 15 had worked hard all match and stomped over for a try . James Dobbie and Greg Johnson were welcomed to the team and showed some versatility on the field . Beverley had not finished their game and saw new recruit Paul Rodley in top action as he took a further 2 tries showing great pace and agility . Beverley were victorious in their second match and looked forward to their match next Sunday.

The Under 14s team were at home this weekend to face a Goole team they knew would be a tough encounter.

The game started the same way it carried on , Fast . Chris Chapman as usual was in the thick of it taking the ball and running forward putting on pressure from the start . Cameron Young was also quick in the field . Forward pressure from Paul Levine, Joe Gillyon and Ben Smith ensured Beverley made yardage against a hungry Goole pack . Conrad Dean took the ball out and ran only to be taken down and the ball ripped away.

Tackles from Charlie McClusker and Harvey Rann kept Goole at ground level with Robert and Constable ensureing little possession from Goole at this point . Chris Chapman saw a chink in the defence and sliced through it to score . There was no points from a conversion.

Continued hard tackles from Will Cook and Rob Jones could not stop Goole moving in with 2 more tries which were converted . Beverley fought back and saw top try scorer Ruairi Sinkler do what he does best and take another 5 points for his team. The teams had been evenly matched throughout and both had the desire to win . Chris Chapman was not content with this and with his team behind him pushed forward for another try , neatly converted by Keanan ” the boot ” Jones.

Hal Smithson showed clever kicking allowing a chase fom Jack Vorwerg who scored the winning try . A good day for both the teams , next week will see matches for both teams .

Current league leaders Hodgsons faced North Cave in what was a ‘must win’ match for the tanners to realistically put them within touching distance of the One title.

The home side knew they would be in for a tough time, as it was North Cave that had dumped them out of the Grays cup by a scoreline of 5-2 only a few weeks back.

Manager made a change in formation which saw as the lone striker and a strong 5 man midfield backed him up in the hope of snuffing out Cave’s passing game which caused so much trouble in that heavy cup defeat.

A strong wind was blowing from one end of the pitch to the other, and it was Hodgsons that started with that advantage.

The tanners moved forward early on in the match applying pressure to the Cave back line. This pressure paid off as Hodgsons won a corner after just 4 minutes. The corner was delivered superbly and Adam Foster scored from close range with a header.

Much of the first half saw Hodgsons create more chances, but found either the shots were being blocked or the strong wind proved difficult to keep the shot on target.

Danny Cartwright proved this theory as a right foot volley he struck flew over the bar, wind assisted.

North Caves Craig Gorman tried running the channels but found full back Jolly Thorne in good form. Thorne was putting in some crucial challenges at the right time. In the centre club skipper Paul Silvester was working like a cart-horse, throwing in meaty tackles, likewise Dennis Edgar didn’t allow any of the Cave players a moment on the ball with his continuous harassing.

This led to a very cagey opening 45 minutes and a single goal was all that was scored.

The second half saw Cave apply the early pressure, and still with a strong wind behind them, Cave’s Gorman hit a speculative long range effort that was heading straight for the top corner of the goal. Keeper Mike Morris pulled off an amazing save to deny Gorman and keep his side 1 nil to the good.

Hodgsons Steve Grantham continued making fantastic headway down the right hand side and sprayed the ball in fantastic style on numerous occasions. Shaun Gibson provided the aerial threat in the middle which continued to nullify any real Cave attack on goal.

The best chance the away side did have fell to full back Wayne McSeveney. Just inside the box Mcseveney hit a looping shot that bounced off the top of the cross bar and out for a goal kick.

Cave knew they had to push on and this exposed their defence in the remaining 25 minutes of the game. Hodgsons forward Foster made them pay for this by scoring a 2nd goal on 67 mins. He nipped the ball away from the keeper as he hesitated to deal with a ball over the top, and tucked the ball away into an empty net.

There was no way back for the away side now, as Caves Craig Cockin tried desperately to get them back into the match, but was having none of that as the strong Hodgsons full back dealt with him with ease.

The centre half partnership of and were excellent throughout and saw the final moments of the match out with a no non-sense workman like display.

When the referee blew the whistle the players and staff alike knew what this victory meant, the jubilation said it all.

The victory puts Hodgsons 13 points clear of North Cave. Hodgsons only have 1 game remaining which is an away trip to Long Riston on the 19th April. North cave on the other hand have 5 games to play.

Assistant Manager said after the match, “The pressure is all on North Cave to win those matches to put us in the position of having to beat Long Riston in our last match to win the title. Its a position we are more than happy with.”

Match Report – Skirlaugh v Rams (Myton U12)

Beverley Whitestar continued their good league form taking a fine win off a strong Skirlaugh.  The game was well balanced and this ensured an entertaining and competitive match.  Skirlaugh created the better chances early in the game with Beverley twice clearing from their goal line.  Beverley played everything wide and capitalized with excellent running from Ben Hearfield and Tom Bruce.  Skirlaugh on the other hand were strong in the midfield.  Half time 0 – 0.

In the second half Beverley started strongly with centre forwards Ollie Baldwin and Baillie were served up some good chances from James Weldon and Joe Wilson.  Skirlaugh won a couple of corners and piled the pressure on Beverley.  In defence for Beverley Joe Hird and Dale Dennett worked hard to combat any Skirlaugh attack, they were helped by Jake Holmes and Will Harrison.  Beverley had a good spell and when a good ball was pushed to Baillie he struck a great goal to put Beverley into the lead.

Skirlaugh replied and were unlucky not to benefit from a few loose balls, Beverley goal keeper Lewis Richardson was in the thick of the action.  Beverley doubled their lead when Ollie Baldwin scored an almost mirror image goal of the first.  Beverley had to defend further but hung out for a clean sheet and a two nil victory.

Lewis Richardson, Will Harrison, Joe Hird, Tom Bruce, Joe Wilson, Dale Dennett, Jake Holmes, Ollie Baldwin, James Mooney, James Weldon,  Nick Moody, James Busby, Dan Baillie

The last time these two sides met, Hodgsons ground out a 3 nil win. The same happened in the reverse fixture. Once again the two sides were locked in at 0-0 at the half way mark. But the proved too strong in the second half running out comfortable winners by 3 goals to nil.

Manager Lee Hastings had to make several changes, with Andrew Stott (suspended), Dennis Edgar, Danny Piwinski and (Injured) and (watching Leeds).

Into the squad came Craig Evans, Rob Northern and .

After what was a poor opening 45 mins for both sides, Hodgsons had to up the pace in the second half. It was shortly into the second half that captain fired home from close range to put the home side one up.

The goal to seal the 3 points effectively, came from substitute Rob Northern. He received a pass from Silvester beat the Kingburn full back and finished cooly into the bottom corner.

Another substitute, Jordan Dexter, got on the score sheet in the dying few minutes heading home from close range. Dexter appeared to look bemused as the keeper fumbled a catch leaving him the simplest of jobs.

This Saturday 5th March Hodgsons travel to Playing Fields to face Howden Amateurs. K Wallis, Stott and Edgar should all be available, however, striker will be missing as he is away in London.

Tigers suffered their biggest defeat for a number of years when they were beaten 5 nil by a strong Thorngumbald side.  The first 20 minutes saw chances for both sides, with Thorn having a shot cleared off the line and Toby Brown coming close for the Tigers.  On 20 minutes Thorn made the breakthrough when a looping shot beat the keeper. The Tigers struggled to find their rhythm for the remainder of the half, and just before the break Thorn  scored 2 further goals in quick succession to give them a 3 nil lead.

The Tigers started the 2nd half determined to get back into the game, but an early breakaway by Thorn gave them a 4th goal.  Although the game now looked beyond the Tigers, they continued to battle hard and actually dominated much of the play.

Matthew Minshall came closest to scoring on a couple of occasions with his trademark long-range shots, and George Redshaw, who was magnificent in defence, continued to encourage and drive his team mates onwards.  also looked strong as he made his debut for the Tigers.   The run of the ball was with Thorn, however, and they added a 5th late in the game.

George Redshaw  was voted the Tigers Man of the Match, and Toby Brown was the Coaches player of the week.

Molescroft Monsters U16  0  -  Shiptonthorpe Utd U16  5

Shipton took to the field for their first game since mid November, able to field a full squad buoyed by the return to action of striker Callum Hatton, out injured since early October, and influential midfielder Johnny Dowson.

Eager for action Ship took the game to Molescroft from the start, dominating possession and pinning Monsters into their own half for long periods, creating a number of half chances as Molescroft dug in defensively.

The deadlock was broken when Charlie Marsh worked himself enough space to unleash a stinging shot which the keeper could only parry to left wing Mikey Morford, following up on the back post who calmly tapped home.  Monsters then began to establish a toehold in centre midfield as Ships’ midfield pushed forward seeking further scoring chances, pressing forward themselves but Ship’s defensive  line of Jack Thompson, Sam Morrell, Liam Odell and Eddy Drydale held firm and Nathan Redpath was untroubled in goal.

Injuries to Callum, Sam and Mikey’s tiring legs saw the introduction of Jack Coleman, Harrison Dunn and Johnny Moxon for the final 15 minutes of the first half, but the whistle went for the break with the score remaining 1-0 to Ship.

The game ebbed and flowed for 20 minutes after the break as both side battled to establish supremacy in midfield with clear chances few and far between.  Ship doubled their score when Jack Thompson carried the ball forward from defence and as Molescroft backed away, spotted the keeper off his line and played a lob shot from 25 yards, the backpedaling keeper unable to get enough on the ball to keep it out. This goal changed the game as  the next ten minutes saw Ship go on a scoring spree.

First to find the back of the net was Harrison as Johnny Dowson who had dropped to centre half played a perfectly weighted ball forward for him to race clear of the defence and apply a calm finish wide of the keeper into the bottom corner. From a Ship corner whipped in by Richard Strudwick , Callum, newly returned to the pitch, stabbed home as the ball bobbled about in the box. Moments later Jack Coleman broke free and fired a rasping shot goalwards, the keeper parried and Mikey, once more showing his strikers instinct, pounced on the loose ball, smashing it into the top corner to double his tally for the game. Overall a tremendous battling performance all over the pitch from Shipton after a long lay off, and  a well deserved man of the match going to Johnny Dowson.

Athletic were in the end edged out in this tightly contested encounter, with local rivalries at a high it was Beverley who had the better of a competitive first half. Early on Matty James slid the ball forward to James Ayre who screwed his shot marginally wide of the left hand upright. Sam Harman was next to threaten when he came close with his free kick having the Cherry goalkeeper scrambling across his line before the ball passed just wide. The goalkeeper was soon in action again as he saved well from a James Ayre half volley. Beverley continued to press and when a passing combination between Mark Kerman, Liam Sharpley and Matty James, led to the ball landing at the feet of striker James Ayre a goal seemed likely. Ayre’s shot was saved and the score remained deadlocked at the half time interval.

Beverley being top of the league continued to surge forward determined to retain their status. It appeared that the goal had finally come when an out swinging Matty James cross was met by a rising Charlie Hewson whose majestic header seemed goal bound. The Cherry goalkeeper threw out a hand and the ball was saved. Nevertheless not to be denied some good battling down the left side by both Michael Ward and Max Bentham saw the ball break for MattyJames who coolly lobbed the keeper for the opening goal of the match.  Cherry however showed great spirit and a never say die attitude and whilst Beverley were the more threatening an equaliser always looked possible with central defensive duo, Matty Clarke and Josh Northern, being called on to make important challenges.  The second goal of the game came when a ball spread out to the left, found the winger who managed to fire his shot in despite defender Callum ’ best efforts. The ball struck the post and agonisingly for the Beverley supporters into the path of an oncoming forward, who fired the ball high into the net giving keeper, Sam Ogglesby, no chance.

Encouraged by this strike Cherry pushed for a second and it came when a cross field clearance fell to a Cherry player, Aaron Jackman, who fired home powerfully from just outside the area. Beverley tried in desperation to come back and a tricky run from Mark Kerman looked as though it might produce a result before a last ditch tackle saved the day. There was still time for one last chance and Liam Sharpley broke down the right, played the ball to James Ayre who cut the ball back for an onrushing Charlie Sygrove. His shot was on target but yet again there was no way past the Cherry keeper and the match played out for a 2-1 Cherry victory.

A pulsating and very entertaining game of was played by Beverley and Skirlaugh to decide who went to the cup final.  Both teams played the first half at such pace that the half time whistle came as a surprise to everyone.  Both teams played well in midfield and were strong in defence.  Both keepers were well defended but when called on both had important saves to keep their respective teams in the game.  Half time was 0 – 0.

In the second half Skirlaugh were allowed some freedom in midfield and began to benefit from being first to every loose ball.  At 15 minutes into the second half Beverley were undone when a high kicked ball sneaked in to the corner of the Beverley goal.  Skirlaugh then went on the offensive with confidence, encouraged by their first goal.

Beverley defended well with Will Harrison and Jake Holmes playing well for Beverley.  Beverley rallied and created chances from the wing with Joe Wilson going close to equalizing from a Dale Dennett cross.  As the game drew to a close another high ball was served toward the Beverley goal and as the loose ball bounced it fell to the feet of the Skirlaugh forward who put the game out of reach of Beverley.  Final score 2 nil to Skirlaugh.

Beverley Team from:

Lewis Richardson, Will Harrison, Joe Hird, Tom Bruce, Joe Wilson, Dale Dennett, Jake Holmes, Ollie Baldwin, James Mooney, Ben Hearfield, James Weldon,  Nick Moody & Baillie.

It was Joe Stannard who got the last gasp equalizer after the home side looked dead and buried.

The first chance was quick into prospective for Beverley as right – winger Joe Dodds was one on one with East goalkeeper Shane Tynan but a great save prevented an early lead for White Star. Despite great early attacking by East ’s Cameron Bibby it was Beverley’s Liam Newton who gathered a lot of praise as he was very solid at the back and did a great job of leading Beverley around the park (vocal). It would be fare to say that Beverley bossed the first half with shot’s thundering in by and some brilliant foot work by Joey Calam which created key chances. At this point Beverley should have been 1 – 0 up as a great ball was floated in by Andy Blanchard and it only needed the slightest of touches from but he could not manage to connect with the ball. Just before the half time the home side got what they deserved as Joe Stannard made it one – nil after a lovely timed cross and Joey Calam made it two – nil. But there was still time as East Hull had the last chance before the break as Ryan took it round Beverley’s goalkeeper Andy Kirman and the ball was cleared by Beverley defender Liam Newton.

Again the action was quick into the second half as Ryan for the away side put East Hull right back into the game. At the other end Stannard headed the ball from the corner and should have scored if it wasn’t for great reflex from East Hull’s stopper Shane Tynan. Beverley’s defence was questioned as Ryan Johnson got the equalizer for East Hull.

Supporters never saw this coming as East Hull scored again from Cameron Bibby to make it 3 – 2 to East Hull with just seven minutes remaining. It was a disappointing end to Joe Dodds performance as he came off with an injured wrist. But he still pulled off a man of the match performance. What a game Joe Stannard equalized in the last two or three minutes, after a very entertaining game it some how ended up 4 – 4! After a hat – trick from Joe Stannard.

UNDER 14s KNOCK OUT CUP
TIGERS 1 RANGERS B 0

Following a 5-2 league defeat at the hands of Cottingham the previous week, the Tigers were determined to show that lessons had been learned in this cup quarter final match. George Redshaw, playing right back, proved to be the lynch pin for the Tigers, as he continually made outstanding tackles and inspired the rest of his team mates.

Throughout the first half both teams showed great skill and commitment, and they both had good chances but were unable to open the scoring.

At the beginning of the second half the Tigers made some tactical substitutions and put fresh legs on the pitch. A few minutes later Tigers opened the scoring when a cross from Captain Alex Fleeman was finished off by Conner Spence, to give the Tigers a deserved 1-0 lead.

Jamie Walker, Joe Jowsey and Simon Bromwich all continued to pressure the Cottingham defence, but the Tigers could not find the second goal that would have made the game safe.

With only a few minutes left Cottingham threw everyone forward in their quest for an equaliser to take the game into extra time. Redshaw, Toby Brown, Matthew Minshall and Bailey Spooner were more than up to the task of repelling Cottingham’s attacks. When Cottingham did have shots on target, goalkeeper Sam Burton was in tremendous form and made a number of excellent saves.

Over the course of the game all the Tiger’s players showed great determination to win, and they can now look forward to a semi-final game against one of the three Myton League teams still left in the competition.

Sam Burton was voted the Tigers Man of the Match and George Redshaw was the Coaches Player of the Week.

UNDER 12s KNOCK OUT CUP

1 HALL ROAD RANGERS 0

This was a repeat of last year’s final which Town lost 4-3.

Both teams deserve credit for producing another cracking cup tie with keeper Tom Norton, Keanan Jones and Nathan Mist all excelling for Beverley in a superb team performance. The winning goal came midway through the first half from Joe Edgar who converted a Mist cross following his length of field run. The game swung from end to end with good attacking play matched by committed defending throughout.
